geeze u guys

i just like talking about medical stuff. i'm not scared of dying of it, i know that's extremely unlikely. but it's still interesting to read about and shitty for the people that die, and also the millions of people being forced to stay in their homes in Wuhan is pretty insane.

sorry i didn't make a thread for every other problem the world faces, we could do that if you want

nah we can rape and abuse dudes, but we're kinder and somehow men are scared to report anything because society tells them they are less of a man for "complaining" about a woman doing that to them.

dudes are laughable, for sure. but in many dv instances they get violent when laughed at in a one on one setting.

After making a thread for each of the world's problems, we ought to have faceoff threads through which we determine which problems are worse than others and what the ultimate most problematic problem is.

pero what some elected officials call trafficking is just plain old prostitution and women having autonomy over their own bodies and disobeying the cultural demand to provide free sexual labor. how can we protect women who want to have sex for money and those who are coerced and forced into it (at the same time)? i'd say by having laws that protect sex workers, but baby, that's just me.

Single-use plastics are prohibited in the sex work industry. They acidify the oceans.

S Korea had 30-something confirmed infections 2 days ago. now they have 346. from the added 142 today:

Quote:
The bulk of the newly confirmed infections were among those who attended services or were affiliated with a branch of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus in the city of Daegu in the southeast of South Korea, bringing the country’s total infected to 346 as of Saturday morning local time as new infections were showing signs of slowing in China.

Public health officials were trying to track down some 4,475 members of the church, more than 500 of whom reported having symptoms, according to South Korea’s Center for Disease Control. Two of those infected with the virus have died in South Korea.

Woman believed to have given it to everyone was never in China, but the church/cult has a large presence there.

Italy went from 2 confirm to 79 today, and 2 dead.

50,000 people in 11 towns are being quarantined. They cannot leave their towns. Schools closed, no sporting events, churches advised to not have services.

Italy already suspended flights to/from China several weeks ago.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-51602007

This shit is already everywhere. The more they test the more they will find.

Korea is now up to 500. Three days ago it was in the 30s.

Some good news for my fellow chronic lung disease and allergies crew: "Allergic diseases, asthma and COPD are not risk factors for SARS-CoV-2 infection." (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/...1111/all.14238)

I am not worried about getting this personally, because it's pretty likely it will come here and many people will get it, and there is nothing we can do about that at this point. It sucks and will cause many deaths, but people under 50 are unlikely to die, from what we know right now.

But I am concerned about things like medications and medical supplies that come from China. I kinda feel like an idiot but I'm pretty sure Monday I'm going to call my docs to get 3 month refills on everything I need. Might be worth thinking about. There almost assuredly will be many cases in the USA. I really don't want to go through SNRI withdrawals and not have asthma medications.

Not that anyone was planning on it, but I'd stay away from hospitals right now unless you absolutely need to go.

I would not call it exciting at all but it is a big deal and not enough people are seeing that yet, mostly because our government is doing a shitty job being informative.

I think there is something like being too informative as well, and that's true for Europe. For 3 weeks now, I look at the stats of "most read" of the Guardian, Austrian and German state media. The top 5 are Covid-19, day after day. That's called hysteria to me, and isn't helping, either. Why do people (including myself) read detailed accounts on confirmed cases thousands of miles away, and that daily? I haven't learned anything new in the past 3 weeks that I would call important information. The same "warnings" apply. And the rest is just making sure that Chinese restaurants get vandalized (hurray for Austria), and citizens with Chinese heritage get cursed at and even beaten up (hurray for Italy and Germany).

People will continue to die, but in "first world" countries, the numbers will be far lower than the fatalities because of the flu, car accidents, let alone gun violence in the US. We have a health system and the logistics that allow for measures like what Italy is doing within 24 hours.

Once this spreads in Africa, we can watch what being fucked means, most African countries don't have an even remotely functioning health system, let alone systems to even keep track of cases. We might have a shortage of certain medication (although pharma industry is already switching production, reprise), but we won't have what Africa is facing. Yet I don't read that countries are sending help to install measures like access to a "spread counter", suits, masks, or logistical experts to any African country. Because we never have, Covid 19 is just perfect as addition to famine, to HIV, cholera, dengue and malaria, if we get lucky, they'll drop like flies.
Thank god I can read that Nike, Apple and Samsung are worried about sales figures. Consumerism is in danger!

But meanwhile, let's read about a day in quarantine of two senior citizens in Sussex.

(I'm sorry. I'll see myself out!)

Excellent post. I guess I don't hear or see people giving a shit abut this around here. The point isn't the few people who have it - it's the transmission itself, how it is exponentially getting worse, and is going to snowball a lot. And yeah, vast majority of people will live. But it's way deadlier than the flu, and once a million people have it, you're talking about 10k-20k deaths, potentially. And the potential for hundreds of millions of people to get it is there. Of course it could be fewer and if it is it might not be a lot compared to many other things, ******* good-old regular influenza, but the potential for it to cause a widespread disease and even a yearly recurring disease like the flu is far from negligible at this point.

It is important to not cause hysteria, of course, and the vandalism/racism is fucked up. But countries should have closed their borders to China and been quarantining weeks if not months ago. They've been treating this like no big deal and the USA still is. It's very likely it is affecting Africa and it's just not been noticed/reported yet. It surely will affect there and suffering and mortality will be immense. I agree that that will be the biggest tragedy.

True, not sure why really, election year? I haven't started consuming US News again, I just looked, the difference is weird.
Bla bla polls bla bla, Iran, and next to nothing on this.
Weeks after Europe cut flights to and from China, I read that inner Asian flights are still busy, which is completely insane to me. So you can (or could) use mass transit in China, waltz into an airport, and casually fly to India, no problem. Yet we now know and China knew it for weeks, that the first symptoms don't just take two weeks, it could be 6 after infection. Yet, quarantine is still 2-3 weeks. Tbh I have no idea how it should work to bring China to a stop, including transit and airports. State of war, military, something like that, but besides a tiny financial problem, I wonder how exactly you'll feed millions of people once you force them to stay inside their homes.

I actually do worry, the Dan Brown novel part of my brain is trying to imagine what this is going to look like in 6 months if we don't find a treatment until then. I can't imagine it tbh.

I think they don't want it to hurt the economy and yeah, election year. But IDK. They don't want to panic people I guess but at this point people should be on alert for sure.

You can still come into the USA from China but only if you're a citizen and they redirect you to certain airports and they do a screening on you. Probably for fever. I guess that's reasonable for people who were already there when this started, but they should be considering self-quarantine now that people can make the choice to go to an infected area. If you really need to go, you have to quarantine when you come back.

I don't think it will be a tiny financial problem, either. Industry will stop almost completely, except for medical industry and maybe food service/delivery. People need to be fed but also need money to live in general. Do you force companies to pay them anyway? Does the gov't pay them? I don't know if the CCP would take on that burden or could. But I guess they're already dealing with it in Wuhan and found a way... but they're also literally barricading people in their homes and probably under-reporting cases.

And what if the USA needs to do this (to be selfish for a second)? Who pays my bills (well luckily I work from home but you get my meaning)? I guess in the USA we are shit out of luck because freedumb and no social service network. And I mean I don't think there will be any kind of general quarantine but it would be very hard to quarantine any kind of medium sized city without police/army everywhere. There's so many ways out.

No way we'll have a vaccine until at least then. Maybe they'll find a really effective antiviral, I think now they're just kinda throwing them all at people to see if they help. Also serum therapy, although I read one of the young doctors from Wuhan died despite serum therapy (transfusion of blood from someone who recovered and had known antigens) and they now think you can be reinfected very soon after first infection (so antigens may not be that protective for some reason).

With "tiny financial problem" I meant the opposite, a fucking gigantic problem. We might see a small scale test run of that soon, Italy is broke as shit as it is, I do wonder what companies will do with 50k people who are put on house arrest now.

S Korea up to 763. From 30 a few days ago. Including almost all the patients from a psych ward (https://www.bloomberg.com/news/artic...ard-have-virus).

The takeaway from this is S Korea is testing a lot, and finding a lot. Other countries should be also. Obviously it didn't go up 200% in 4 days in actuality and this is still a fraction of the actual people infected. But they are at least really testing people.

Italy up to 155, so almost double in a day.

Two more young doctors from Wuhan died today as well.

This is an interesting post with a statistical prediction model of the worst case scenario (basically virus isn't contained at all and continues infecting people at the same relative rate): https://drive.google.com/file/d/1bS6...UU6a8lQHv/view

Not to work anybody up or anything, but it could really get this bad. They estimate we are about on day 35-40 and China is around day 80. This is definitely speculative but it's important to see how it will exponentially get worse, the question is if we will somehow stop it or if the estimates coming from Wuhan are so censored/suppressed that the infection and/or death rate is completely wrong. Which is pretty likely, I mean it is the CCP and they are magically staying around the same ultimate infection numbers the past few days. Which could be purposeful deception or perhaps they are just at capacity and literally can't test anymore or are turning people away.

Or it's possible things are really leveling out, it just seems unlikely.

Italy at 229 infections, 6 dead.

Dow Jones down 1k points. Predictable.

Apparently the WHO doesn't even use the term "pandemic" anymore, nice of them to let everyone know that right now for what certainly is one and not, you know, in the last 10 years since the original SARS. And it's still on their website? (https://www.who.int/csr/disease/swin...s/pandemic/en/)
