why can't college athletes take endorsement deals?
I understand why you don't want to pay college athletes directly, but it seems like the thing that's going to lead guys like Kevin Durant and Greg Oden away from the collegiate ranks is not the NBA salary, but the gigantic endorsement deals they will be offered. I don't understand why they couldn't take these endorsements as college players, within certain rules set by the NCAA. Like I don't want college athletes to be plugging local car dealerships like B-List Spurs do, but if Addidas or Nike wants to pay them a fuck ton to wear their shoes and be in their commercials, why can't they? It is basically a job and most college students have them.

It is pretty stupid imo. They make the school so much money and most of the time the students don't even graduate(in the big sports where ppl could actually get endorsements).

if they had huge endorsement deals, you think they'd even consider staying in school?? there's absolutely no way.

yeah Eulogy, that's retarded. If they made lots of money at school....they would stay at school longer.

kevin durant made it very clear he wanted to stay in college but how can you say no to a shoe company throwing money in your face
it's not like the nba contracts are the sweetest plum about turning professional. |

product endorsements are an enigma to me. goes giving a dude 10 million dollar for an endorsement really going to measurably increase their bottom line by at least ten million dollars? just cos some spearchucker on the court is wearing nike instead of reebok?
like do people actually think IM GONNA BUY THIS SHOE BECAUSE THEY PAID THIS GUY 10 MILLION BUCKS TO WEAR IT. |

just like sprite tells to brothas to drink sprite by using some annoying black puppet. now the brothas drink sprite all day long (still 40s in the evening though, sprite goes well with playing b-ball (accoring to sprite)).

My point is that it is already not about being in college, most of them don't even graduate. So they are just there to have a shot at the pro's and for the college to make money. Why not let the athletes make some extra money while in school.
