Weren't some of these tracks played live with Mark Tulin on bass? I remember hearing Freak live before the recorded version, and it's way better...

Hahahahahha.

I’m listening now while doing admin tasks at work. It’s very good in parts (the solo in “Song for a Son” is one of his best ever) but also very weird and uncomfortable in other parts. Frustrating how close he comes to recapturing his greatness here. Reminds me of 80’s-90’s pre-TOOM Dylan: the old genius returns once in a while but it’s mostly a frustrating mess.

yeah, I became a fan right after Zeitgeist so Teargarden vol 1 was essentially the first big new release i experienced save for that documentary or American Gothic (which i kinda "politely ignored" at the time)

and with that, of course, came the legendary obelisk

I'm fonder of some of these songs now. But there's still a lot of shit. One song at a time was a huge mistake, it should have just been properly sequenced album comprised almost entirely of the stuff he did on that Spirits in the Sky tour. That group of songs at least had some kind of aesthetic, and the sort of ornate production some of them got in the studio worked for me alongside the artwork. Would it have been a GREAT album by SP or solo standards? Of course not. But at least it would have had a vibe.

What could have been:

Teargarden Theme
Song for a Son
Widow Wake My Mind
Circular Change
Emerald Green is the Colour
Tom Tom
A Stitch in Time
Spangled
Morning Dew
Rite of Spring
Cottonwood Symphony

Much more coherent and thematically consistent, imo.

There was a time, twenty years ago or more, when I was convinced that I loved the Pumpkins more than anybody else in the world. However, I listed to about the first 15 seconds of the first 2 songs on this album and was just so disgusted and embarrassed, I could go no further. Billy may admonish you, Netphoria, but I notice you're devoted.

Bloody love Teargarden. The artwork to Vol II is absolutely incredible. Agree with the comments above about Spirits in the Sky, should have been the basis for the first 10 songs, recorded with that band, rough and ready like. When the Cock Crows would have been an interesting start to Vol 2 with Tom Tom being the stand out on that release.

It's not that it was great or in some cases even good, it was at least interesting, although as mentioned above the wait for songs was a ballache.

i still think the Vol 2 EP was pretty good. 2nd or 3rd best LP/EP release of SP2, imo

“The Fellowship” would be a great song if Billy’s Alex Jones appearances didn’t have me thinking it was most likely about his fantasy of running some weird alt right extremist cult.

Teardgarden Theme is wild. I don't remember hearing that before.

Even The Fellowship is too good for Shing

project would have been alright if he stuck to a once a month schedule or something

2 and half months plus for Astral Planes was hilarious

-"A Song for a Son", "Lightning Strikes," and "Teargarden Theme" are SP2 highlights, and much more exciting than anything on Shiny and Oh So Bright.
-If I was in a crowded room and heard "Tom, Tom" (not that it would ever happen in real life), I could imagine thinking it was some demo from the 1988-2000 era.

That's about all I have to say. I don't think I'd listened to any of those songs since 2011. Sadly, even the worst songs from this era seem more energetic than anything from Shiny.

The era was pretty funny in hindsight now that I'm not emotionally invested in them.

It seems like the work of a man losing his mind, but then I remember he was banging Jessica Simpson at the time, so he couldn't have been having too bad of a time.
