Matt Sweeney on WTF Podcast
Matt Sweeney was on Marc Maron's podcast. Episode is available now.
http://www.wtfpod.com/podcast/episod...-_matt_sweeney Kind of interesting. Doesn't say much about playing with Billy. Says he's never listened to MSOTS. Refers to Zwan as "that billy corgan thing" |

Band members got screwed out of tons of money. That's why the album wasn't as strong as it could have been. Elliot Roberts convinced billy to only fill it with his solo-penned songs.

a thought on WTF: if you enjoy the show but haven't listened to the first 100 episodes you are truly missing out.

Bjorn wasn't involved with MTAE. I think Billy might have dumped him.

I'd commented before I heard the episode, so that's my bad.
That bit about being in Tasmania and having negative $25 in his account was pretty compelling a couple of years after... I'd have thought the best-selling album of his career (probably) and six months on a well-received world tour would have led to some nice scratch. Money comes and goes, I suppose. If Corgan was running that show the way he runs the Pumpkins now, I imagine the other members had very little to show for it at the end. Sweeney was nice to comment on Corgo being a great guitar player and songwriter and generally not talking shit. Seems like his experience was much like the fans - a lot of fun at the beginning and then not very much fun with regard to the follow-through. |

i havent heard the episode yet. i just thought this was common knowledge as to why so many great(er) songs weren't included on MSOTS.

Yeah Corgans story is the band was a bunch of lazy assholes who did bad shit on tour after the album came out.
The bands side of the story is a bunch of friends went to record and album and were bullied around and couldn't get anything in contracts. Both sides are true but Corgan never at all acknowledge the fact that he is a cheap bully and pretty much tried to take advantage of them. I'm sure in his mind though he is a god a among mere mortals and they should have just been happy he let them stand in his radiant glow as he obsessively planned some multi album concept that like everything else he abandoned and then went on to blame others for it's failure to become a reality. Yeah the thing was a cluster of fuck of disparate personalities, but Corgy was the ringmaster. |

In hindsight it's crazy that guys like Sweeney and Pajo would have even wanted to start something up with Corgan... He's gotta be the worst kind of guy to form a band with.

didn't bill approach them? i don't think it's crazy to understand how a bunch of indie musicians would want to be part of a band fronted by one of the most successful musicians of their generation

The story was always that Billy and Sweeney wanted to work together for close to a decade.
There was a ton of cheesy PR about how it was some kind long simmering dream for them that finally came to fruition. And lets face it they did fucking amazing stuff together, back then who would know that Billy was some insane control freak once business entered into it. Pretty sure the band was totally blind sided by it all once they got into the studio. |

I bet the CD sales didn't cover the advance that bill got and the tour lost money.
Since 2005 it's been a tale of diminishing returns. Which helps explain why billy's band now consists of billy and his lead guitar tech |

I think the Johnny Cash album probably outsold the Zwan record 20 to 1. The God's Gonna Cut You Down video has 28,000,000+ hits on youtube... Honestly has 580,000. According to this podcast Sweeney changed they key of that song and you can definitely hear his style on that track.
Also funny to hear Sweeney (talking about Billy Gibbons, but about a famous Billy nonetheless) talking about how guys that sell millions of records just lose touch and are obsessed with having a hit single and fear trying anything risky or less than obviously commercial. Sounds like the story of Mary Star of the Sea to me. |

Okay am I just stupid or is there literally no resource on the internet where you can find out how many copies an album has sold? Like I can find stuff for albums out right this second but nowhere on like Billboard or RIAA where I can just ask it about older stuff.
I was all ready to tell grape "why don't you google those numbers, idiot" but it appears I may be the idiot here |
