How do you embed the soundcloud player here? I couldn't find an embed code shown on their site. When I click 'share' it just shows a regular link and options to post to facebook, twitter, etc.

we should have a thread like the vocaroo thread but TEB provides the lyrics for his song and then netphorian posters individually take turns auditioning for the vocal part, singing over the instrumental.

Your song is actually a straight rip off of 'Halo' by The Cure. Is it a cover? It sounds like the exact same song just sped up.

Wow. i knew the song yeah of course but i haven't heard it in a long time. The guitar in my song at the beginning actually does something very similar to what the bass does i halo its true. I mean im totally aware my guitar line was totally Robert Smithesque. The song is in the same key too and i use that sort of synth strings in everythig i do and i picked that up from the cure (well and new order too). After that though i wouldn't say it's ripping off anything else specifically, like an exact line or anthing, there's nohing like my chorus in Halo for one, in fact it kinda stays the same all the way. The bass starts on the same note as the bass does in my song too, i just checked, which helps make it sound similar. They're actually using a Fender VI in this so theres basically two basses its a bit hard to tell what each is playing sometimes.
Like i said i was aware it was cure sounding. But i hadn't realised yet it was THAT close to any of their songs. And yeah, it does make me feel shitty to realise it now. Then again rock music has been doing that for as long as its existed. Its just that the cure have a very specific sound It is also the curest song i have an I was always ambivalent about it for this reason. I might end up scrapping it from this planned record now actually. I don't know. |

I think what i might do is end up changing the guitar in the first two verses. I think if i did that it would certainly lessen the ripoff feel.

you know what pisses me off is that this:
is kind of intentional ripoff of this (well heavily inspired by, well except for their chorus): and yet it sounds a lot lot less similar than halo does to the other song that WASN'T intentionally ripping off anything. Note to self, if you think it sounds really too curesque, its probably because you actually ripped off one of theirs, you just haven't realised it yet. edit: i actually now feel downright depressed by it. Like im both glad and sad that you pointed it out to me. Glad because i can save myself the embarrassment now by either forgetting about it or changing it. But sad because i thought i'd done something pretty decent which really was just an unconscious ripoff. I'd actually done this once before but years ago. Wrote and recorded something and all the time something was nagging me like it sounds like something (which wasnt even the cae now, i never got the nag and i wrote this last winter, id have had time you think to figure it out). but after days of not being able to tell what it could be reminding me off i just wrote it off, thought well it might just be a false impression im having. And then about two months later i realised it was Interpol's Untitled i'd ripped off. The guitar was pretty much the same minus one or two details. Maybe it just slipped into his mind subconsciously? Me and my buddy were gonna do a stand-up open mic night for the hell of it and were writing material, and pretty much every joke I came up with was just something I've heard from another standup |

Your recordings sound top notch TEB. Do you have your own studio set up?

I figured it out finally. When you click 'share' on soundcloud some options pop up and there's a tab that says 'embed' and it gives you two options for embedding the soundcloud player. The second code is the one that works here on netphoria.

well that's what music is all about though. Every idea is just a spinoff of someones elses idea to a certain extent... But then theres just flat out plagiarism.... Like The Exlploding Boys track for example lol

You can get away with aping a riff, You just have to make sure that the melodies surrounding it are different from the song you aped... Theres only so many notes, so it's only natural that theres been thousands of bands with similar chord progressions

There's a lot more to a riff than just the chord progression. You can play any 3 chords in a nearly infinite amount of ways

if anyone wants to give me some feedback on this (my bands first ep) i'd be keen to hear it. we are getting ready to finish off an albums worth of tracks next (in the next 6 months or more realistically) that were recorded at the same time.

I want to say ive been writing music for a long time too and its true but i never took it as seriously and been as...thorough with it if can say that... as kinda just like...starting maybe 2 years back. I mean I for one wrote in bands before a lot and that's totally different. You're just putting one brick. Now all the bricks are mine but there's a problem with that. When you mix a lot of people's influences, chances are the end result is not that bound to sound like a specific song cause you were probably all thinking about slightly different things in regard to where you wanted to take the song. when it's all me, i guess that's what can happen. It's just MY influences and then you end up with a potential ripoff. I mean i have 12 other songs right now for that "record" that are not a clear ripoff (like i have no problem with "strongly influenced by", but i do have a problem with "sounds a fucking lot like" especially if one specific song can be pinpointed) of anything so i should be happy about that instead of focusing on the one song i did that is too much like one that already existed. when i'm multi-tracking on a DAW it's difficult for me not to lose focus on what i'm really doing and just start clicking through millions of options.
i realize its similar to drawing (start around the perimeter and work your way in - never spending too much time with detail in the beginning) but i just can't get the hang of it. analog multi-tracking i'm even better with maybe just because of the phsyicaity of the tape and the faders and rewinding idk. i've gotta be hands on and it feels weird/wrong sitting down in front of a computer to make music god i'm such an old man how can i survive in this world i get much better results using the DAW for post-production or manipulating things already recorded i just can't compose from the ground up on the dang things. its like when i sit down in front of a DAW its too tempting to try all the things i can't normally do with my phsyical setup |
