Adore has more moods going for it than people seem to give it credit for
Most of which I would say were "wistful"

Gish is easier and more fun to listen to, but for the most part it's much less developed than any other SP1 album. Adore is the peak of Billy's songcraft

The songwriting is way better on Adore but I just find Gish way more “alive” sounding. On Adore I feel like I can physically hear Billy painstakingly obsessing over how every second of every song sounds and what everyone’s public perception of him is. It just sounds like he’s lost in a sea of his own emotional baggage without the benefit of his trademark loud/soft dynamics, his incredible guitar playing, Jimmy’s drumming, or an actual producer to anchor him. I don’t know. It’s just not my vibe. But I dig it. And I respect Billy for putting himself in the difficult position of starting from zero without any of his aesthetic languaging to lean back on or a familiar approach to working.

Adore is just meaningful on an entirely different level. Outside of Suffer and Snail Gish doesn’t do much for me.

they are hard to compare because Bill's outlook as an artist on Gish vs. Adore is day and night. Gish is a naïve 25 year old on a fuck ton of drugs doing insane guitar solos and singing LSD fueled platitudes of self-empowerment, ready to take on the world. Adore is a grim and seasoned 33 year old man already "past his prime" and on the ropes against deep personal loss, huge public pressure, and a disintegrating band while coping by taking MDMA in a hot tub every night

this is a random but, more importantly, wrong & ridiculous statement

sounds like '98 Billy isn't the only one doing MDMA in a hot tub!

Christ, they were only that young when they recorded Gish?

When I remember how young most notable people where when they did notable things, it really reminds me of how little I've accomplished in that same amount of time, and cements how I'll never accomplish anything consequential in my life.

Like, if I were ever going to be an accomplished scientist, a proficient musician, an interesting artist, a good writer, or anything like that… I'd already be one.
