There are some incredible parts of the movie. It's very good and was almost great.
There were numerous instances of ppl doing incredibly dumb things:

1) let's immediately land on a presumably inhabited world rather than orbit for a minute attempting broadcasts to make clear our peaceful intentions

2) let's all take our fucken HELMETS OFF b/c some dude says the air in a waterfall room is "cleaner than earths" (it's a fucken alien world what if there's a gas or fine particulate your instruments aren't even calibrated to detect)

3) let me coo at this beautiful cobra worm until it jumps down my throats (this was actually kinda satisfying in the classic idiot-deserves-painful-agony horror trope)

4) let me immediately unquestioningly kill myself, blow up the ship that is our only way home b/c frantic lady says that thing in the sky is headed to earth and up to no good, do you agree crew? Yes we unthinkingly agree let's do it!!!

These are just the few that particularly irked me

Still, somehow, it was fun to watch

It is under rated. It was released in 1999 so it's the same era as 'Adore'
Visually it's incredible and story wise it's haunting

It's a movie that stays with you after you've finished watching it

guardians of the galaxy vol. 2 - 5/10

strangely edited, weird tonal shifts, and ultimately polarizing. some humor lands, some doesn't. it was clear a lot of love went into it but it doesn't come together as well as the first film, and i didn't feel strongly about that film to begin with

eXistenZ - 8/10

Movies like this almost make me wish I still smoked weed. Also, Jennifer Jason Leigh can finger my porthole any time.

to play devil's advocate, this is all the stuff that makes scifi possible

i do agree it really pushed the viewer's plausibility threshold quite a bit though, and characters flat out made dumb fucking decisions just to get on with the narrative

i like nitpick #1 because nobody has ever done that in the history of humanity, you know i'm thinking of exploring new lands & stuff. humans aren't peaceful.

dated, trite 90s suburban angst, romanticizes a middle aged man's fantasies about a teenager, has the old homophobe actually repressed gay trope that is total fiction, generally extremely bad but man i'll tell you annette benning is goddamn great in it

I've always been interested in suburban American life
I like Caroline and the real estate king

I always thought Ricky was quite creepy, at least initially

I loved it when I was 17. Thought it was the most profound thing I had ever seen up to that point. I watched it so many times back then, I don't know that I could view it objectively at this point.

I remember watching it about 5 years ago after a long absence and thought it mostly held up.

2010: The Year We Make Contact - 7/10

As expected, not a patch on the original. Still, a rather respectable sci-fi film in its own right.

'Your Name' is a very good film worth seeing, although it could have been shorter.
