The two colleagues are likely friendly with each other, but that garfield comment seemed like a slight jab towards his colleague. The journalist who was kicked out could have eviscerated Billy in the press, but he didn't, he instead sought out reviews from other people who were there. The man handled it as professionally as he possibly could given his situation. I'm an ardent supporter of free speech and nothing much is going to change my mind towards Billy's actions. It was completely hypocritical of him.

I don't think that is entirely true, a lot of the other artists I follow also get shit on, even more than Billy at times. I think Billy has brought a lot of this criticism on himself as well, and he continues to invite it. He just acts on whatever whims he has and tries to sell it as art with a dollop of integrity. In this scenario he heavily promoted the Siddhartha event, set it to an 8 hour timeframe to maximize publicity, handed out a badly written artist statement, and then spent 8-9 hours trying to set things up. If we buy the argument that what he's doing is "art" then we can also conclude that it was "bad art" because it was not successful in its execution, especially in terms of what his artist statement claimed. It's difficult to defend Billy's teahouse performance because it really is just about him garnering publicity for his shop and bringing in warm bodies through the door. I can't in good conscience defend it on any artistic merit, and I don't blame other critics for not being able to either. I fully believe that had Billy put some thought, effort, and real intent behind the event, with some genuinely good noise music, the reactions would have been different. People too often, especially Billy, default to the notion that people are going to criticize him anyway so he doesn't even fucking try to take art seriously.

Somewhere in between the actual performance and that recent tribune article a lot of people seemed to forget that the Siddhartha performance was not "a concert." I knew that was going to happen.

Just re-read the Tribune piece and it really doesn't make much sense. I honestly don't think that any of the negative critiscism BC received had anything to do with his choice of literature or the fact that the performance was tied to a piece of literature. If anything the spoken word bits helped to balance the performance out. Take out the words and it would have been a much larger and more boring mess.

It seems like the Tribune piece is trying to use the literature tie-in as a crutch, saying "look at all these other musicians who have done things based on the written word" as if that actually matters when judging the final product. Bottom line is that, with our without Hesse, the ZuZu's performance just wasn't that good.
