If there are no neighbours to hear you playing guitar or music, there are also no neighbours to hear you screaming for help, so that's something to consider IMO.

I'm looking at both places tomorrow. It's really still a toss up for me. I'm so lazy I'll probably take the first one. I'm ready to move now. I found some compromising spots in the same neighborhood as #1 but haven't gotten any replies or return calls about them.

anymore pics?
judging by those and other personal factors, i'd choose #2 if i were you. i don't own a car so living within walking distance to a grocery store and having on-site washer/dryer are high up my list of importance. and that may not be to someone who drives. so yeah, if i drove like you do, i would definitely prefer more space and windows and no carpet. plus i like quiet so i can make noise. i also don't like densely populated areas and i like lots of greenery and being close to a park. when you say you have walking access to things, what things do you mean? bars? stores? museums? parks? man, i can't wait to move. |

I meant walking to music venues, bars, night life in general. This spot (1) is closer to greenery and the river and all of that too. But the building is more densely populated.
The upside of the 2nd spot is just how gorgeous it is. But it's on the edge of the city proper limits and there are chains and shopping centers nearby. Boring location. I can post more pics tonight. I still have no idea which to choose. |

I'd go with 2 personally b/c of the neighbor issue. I just moved from a super noisy spot where I wore earplugs 75% of the time I was indoors to a very quiet apartment. It had the high ceilings, wood floor, and was otherwise charming (like your #2 sounds) but between the upstairs neighbor stomping constantly and the landlord's woodshop (yes, woodshop) in the basement I rarely got to enjoy it.

We've got a relatively quiet street. Good neighbors. Kinda don't like the fact we don't interact more with all our neighbors but the ones we do we like. I like Independence and Gladstone and Raytown. They are very blue collar and no frills. |

from my experience, if these things (bars and venues) aren't close by - i won't go out of my way to drive to them. it's not necessarily the places themselves, but the proximity of the places. i like having the options close at hand. neighborhood spots.
i'm just worried that my already dwindling social life will disappear completely if i move too far away from these things. as an example, one of my open mic spots will now be two blocks away if i choose number one. if i choose number two - i will have to drive 20 minutes, find a place to park, all those hassley things that make me talk my self out of doing things. i'm so torn |

don't be torn, and don't be seduced by anything but location.
What are the three rules of real estate? Location, location, and location. That's all. Follow the rules, you'll never be disappointed. Break them and be sad. |

If you have to drive to get anywhere fun then don't move there.

they apply just as much, for different reasons, when you're renting. Location is everything.

can you find another place in a good location that doesn't have thin walls?
how thin are the walls? thin walls would bother me. |

i looked at the "shitty" one today. it's not as bad as i thought. the walls aren't that thin and only one wall would be shared (not going to be sandwiched in between two units).
as far as other places, i'm just waiting to be called back to set up a showing. i found a couple of other possibilities in the same location and they're older houses with more privacy. |
