i mean if i was an anti-capitalist muslim extremist i'd probably look at SXSW and see it as a symbol of debauched western capitalist consumerism

because it is

I didn't know it was stolen, damn.

SXSW is awful, no idea why people attend still. Any large festival like this always has jumped out at me as waiting for catastrophe.

it's gotten much bigger and far more corporate

the first half of the festival is basically a drunken networking party/conference for the tech industry

then the music fest starts and all the hipsters from williamsburg to silver lake descend upon us like culture locusts

SXSW used to be where bands were discovered and now it's where bands are promoted

The film part is great (especially if you get a badge or wristband hookup)

i was just talking about that to someone else*, the film festival isn't condusive to binge drinking and general drunkenness. it's people shuffling from one theater to another.

it's the monster outdoor downtown drunken spectacle i can't handle

Never been to that portion, but what I gather is it is what the music festival used to be. When I'd go, a wristband would get you in pretty much anywhere and it wasn't full of douchebags and corporate sponsors. Trots' line "SXSW used to be where bands were discovered and now it's where bands are promoted" is the best summarization I've heard of SXSW.
