I kind of liked FOL. I have worse memories associated with that Super Bowl Sunday.

i remember when people said FOL had Bill's best vox of SP2

it seems that general concensus has changed!

i thought GLOW had some of the best 2.0 vox. love that bass, too.

so what do people think about that song being released in a video game? total sellout move? good idea?

"Can I please just talk to you

Anyway I liked having 1979 in Grand Theft Auto 4, more or less. Driving around with it on was nice, but I remember I'd go out of my way not to go on killing sprees while it played. Felt awkward.

They literally were up until that point though.

Jeeze what the fuck happened to his voice during that Zeitgeist period? It's still not great but it's a lot better on Oash/Monuments than it was during that whole period.

You say this like Billy's voice was ever good.

His voice always sounded like shit. He has studio magic of modern technology to thank for his career. His nasally vocals on "Bullet..." turned me off from SP when I was a kid.

well, that's one way to reveal you're not actually a fan of the band!

He only likes the pre-Gish era of the band, before it was cool.

It wasn't ever fundamentally good, but he had this insane, unorthodox delivery that fit with the alternative rock movement like a glove. And then somewhere along the way (most notably starting with Zeitgeist but shown signs of the "symptom" beginning on Adore and much more so on Machina) he ditched it and went with with a more monotone like Stephen Malkmus/Pavement sounding vocal delivery.

It was probably inevitable, as he probably wasn't going to be able to sustain his original delivery for a career and to be honest he's done a better job lately of finding a middle ground. But there was awhile there were it was quite frankly bad... Which sucks cause the songwriting and musicianship was still quality.

I'd say with Oash and Monuments he's been able to capture the same middle ground that he executed on Machina... It's just too bad he couldn't manage that on Z. Would have been a bad-ass release if he did.

he just kinda got super "throaty" around zwan versus the whole nasal sneering thing he had going from gish to machina (super accentuated on the latter)

coupled w the fact that he was pushed more dryly upfront even with a choir of billys at times it was kind of hard to ignore

What was missing was his voice 'doubling' the guitar tone

i.e. switching between smooth and dreamy vs grungy and gravelly; like in cherub rock or tonight

as seen in this:

and him writing songs with guitar like that (I think. I don't listen to ZG ever)

No man. On Z he took the straight up Stephen Malkmus approach... Low, monotone, purposely lazy. But that was never in Billy's cards.

= the same approach taken here ( but Billy's were less inspired)

Doomsday Clock could have been an epic ripper if Billy didn't take the lazy, degenerate slacker approach. It works for Pavement because that's the shtick they were aiming for but it doesn't work for SP

his "lazy" vocals sound amazing on the adore reissue

definitely doesn't fit the ZG vibe though

it is a bit "drowsier" here but also way more "throaty" than say The Everlasting Gaze
at least he was still hittin' those consonants, for the most part!
