finding out about silverchair's musical skeletons
well i've never really listened to helmet before, but i know DJ was/is a big fan. i was just listening to betty (1994), and "cicada" from frogstomp (1995) is such a rip of "speechless".
and i can't remember now but there's a cover on the rarities CD that is way too similar to findaway. i think it was "wasted" or "fix me". i hate it when i find these too similar rip off's, i don't know how these bands / artists can release the songs knowing how close they sound a like. i mean they must know. |

All the Helmet records prior to them reforming for "Size Matters" were good. "Meantime" and "Betty" were both amazing, especially "Betty". "Size Matters" was decent. The new one is horrible though.
At the end of the day Silverchair was largely Helmet riffs in Nirvana songs. But Page Hamilton from Helmet is a drop-D riff master, so if you want riffs like that, it's hard to be different. As long as someone is TRYING to be a little different, it should be alright. I mean, if a band is a smidge derivative, as long as they are talented and honest, I can look past it. That's why Joy Division is one of my favorite bands, but I also love Interpol. |

Well both bands used the exact same guitar, so clearly it was possessed

I didn't realize their were rules to who your favorite band was. I guess I was fucking up for seven years as well with the Pumpkins being my favorite band. I'll stick with Interpol when they learn to branch out musically. |

I think the song you're thinking of as the rip off to "speechless" is "Undecided" from Frogstomp. In fact, while Daniel Johns had arthirtis, silverchair considered having Page Hamilton as their touring guitarist but Page was working on Size Matters so that's why it never happened.
Both bands as of late have sucked big balls lately. Page is having a mid life crisis being a Hollywood rocker dating porn stars and Daniel is writing shitty pop songs. |

Hysterical about that arthritis thing. Daniel Johns is busy these days trying to sound like Muse and Radiohead and ends up sounding like Coldplay and new U2. |

Yeah, I don't get it. In a recent interview, Daniel said he wished he could forget the first two albums because they don't define silverchair's "true sound". That's when I dropped the ball and renounced my status as a silverchair fan. Their new song "Straight Lines" is pure stupidity and I hate myself for even trying to like "Diorama". I don't care what anyone says, "Tuna In the Brine" is fucking shit.

By the way, those covers of "Wasted" and "Fix Me are of Black Flag.

"The Door" is a ridiculously alternative song. Give them that.

btw, Helmet's "Betty" has to be one of the most influential albeit underrated albums of the early 90's if not Helmet's career....those are just my opinions though. |

Oh, and Daniel is married to Natalie Imbruglia, though I'm not sure if that's any consolation.

Can we get this thread back on topic and talk about how gay a certain lead singer is. I don't care who he's married to, he wrote a song about being anorexic and now he made a very gay video and sings about being tired of "Walking the Straight Line. "

Something I will never forget I felt desperate And stuck to the marrow Invisible to everyone else I’m a sex change And a damsel with no heroine Wake me up lower the fever Walking in a straight line Set me on fire in the evening Everything will be fine Waking up strong in the morning Walking in a straight line Lately I’m a desperate believer But walking in a straight line I don’t need no time to say There’s no changing yesterday If we keep talking and I keep walking in straight lines Wake me up lower the fever Walking in a straight line Set me on fire in the evening Everything will be fine Waking up strong in the morning Walking in a straight line Lately I’m a desperate believer But walking in a straight line |
