It is a bit cringe-y but at the same time when shit on you in high school it does feel good to show up and feel success. But I think most people also wouldn't say it on national tv...

Eh, I applaud his honesty and success. It's pretty clear that all he ever wanted to do was prove to the world that he wasn't the piece of shit loser that they made him feel like (and it probably goes 10x towards his parents over his high school). He worked his ass off to do it, and as a result we get to enjoy the fruits of his labor.
