That's the real poignant question on new year's eve....Who is Bugg, and why are we here?

I love that Billy's comments in that fan club thing are basically the same as instagram today. "We are working on an x and x release. We cut xx songs and choose from them."

Meanwhile, Iha is like, "sorry I am lazy"

A boy and his dog

by James Iha, Smashing Pumpkins guitar player

March 1994

Sassy Magazine

Potato Dog, Salmon Dog, Pterodactyl Dog, Bugg Dog, Bugg-a-Giorno, Buggellini-these are but a few nicknames I have given to my dog, Bugg, symbolizing the trust that grew between a boy and his dog. Five years ago, a puppy was given to a roommate of mine as a present. At first he was welcomed for his cuteness, but she soon disowned him after realizing how much work a puppy created (plus he grew to the size of a smallish prairie-grazing bison). Though I had never owned a pet and regarded them as a waste of time, I felt bad for Bugg and began to help out by taking him for walks, checking his food and water dish, and, reluctantly, cleaning up after him. After a while I had a respect for the beast and I enjoyed the responsibility. And I've seen Bugg grow from the boy that nobody wanted into a strong, loyal and loving, uh...dog.

A little known fact is that Bugg played all of James and D'arcy's guitar and bass parts on Siamese Dream. This pissed James and D'arcy off. Since Bugg is a dog, and dogs are cute, James and D'arcy didn't want to be angry at Bugg. So, they blamed Billy instead. Out of anger, James and D'arcy wrote Adore, which was the Pumpkins' next album. It didn't sell well, so Billy still had the last laugh.

It's sorta like....something that we would 3000% talk shit about today if it came out, but somehow worked back during the (almost mythical) good era

Imagine all the jokes about how Willie Boy, Second of his Name, was better than Solara

i had never seen that fan club thingy, but just imagine that back then, major label pressure would ensure that they release it the month after recording, not a whole year later.

and the end result would be a successful endeavour to most people who had read that fan club thingy...

back in the days when BC delivered

i think we could say that social media today to some degree fulfills the "fan club" model, which in the old days was basically about publicity and brand loyalty in order to solidify a purchasing public

From : Web chat with Billy Corgan and James Iha on July 14th, 1999

http://www.spfc.org/news-press/inter...ontent_id=2811

"[Bquestion] [somagrl] did the band get along during the recording of gish?
[James] [shaunkardinal] who's toes are those in the picture of bugg, in gish?
[James] I believe those are my toes.
[Billy] yes, we got along great…and as a matter of fact we've always gotten along great…all the rest is media hype"

"[James] [omar1] James what is the one most thing you enjoy out of life?
[James] I enjoy being completely domestic, grocery shopping, walking Bugg, and Rocking the world. I guess that's 3 things."

"[James] [BillyLoon] How is Bugg doing? Does he still hang out with the band?
[James] Bugg still has his "paw" in executive managing the band."

and billy returning the attention to himself:

"[James>][Noetic]How is bugg?
[James] Bugg is fantastic. He's a good man. Actually, he's a good dog.
[Billy] i hate to be redundant…but this is a gish chat…"

it's really odd seeing Gish-era pictures now. bittersweet as fuck, just seeing how happy & relaxed Billy actually seemed to look and knowing the quality of the music he was about to make, right before becoming this crotchety old dickweed who couldn't put out a solid album if his life depended on it solely because of his perception of "the kids" and their highly-informed market desires

Because a slow, romantic song about a dog would be weird.
