Default Too bad JC Zeroman isn't in the US now...

he is missing out on all those Tea Parties...

http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/PO...boston.cnn.jpg

Pajamas TV, a conservative Web site that says it gets about 1 million viewers a week, ran streaming video from several protests. PJTV hired McCain campaign poster boy Samuel Joseph "Joe the Plumber" Wurzelbacher to act as a reporter at one of the protests. At least one video shows a protester asking Wurzelbacher if he would like to waterboard Obama.

LOL

p.s. don't move this to the shitty political board please

How weird is that?

And the typical liberal protester is now the ones that have a problem with this protest? They are all about community action, and backing a cause....unless they disagree. Weird I tell ya.

Rescind the billions for Perscription Drugs
Discourage the Laissez-Faire border attitude
Give the remaining TARP money back to the tax payers
Allow the banks to pay back their debts the the tax payers
*Let* the big three automakers go to bankruptcy court like everyone else.
And while he's letting them fail, he can let the insolvent banks fail too.

Yes, Bush left quite a legacy of betrayal to conservative values. Oh, that Obama would return to values of honesty, integrity, accountability and the rule of law.

I wish that was what the tea party was reported being about, returning to governing by such principles rather than grumping about a flatter tax.

Why do these people think this started with Obama? TARP started under BUSH. AIG bailout started under BUSH. All the regulations that were in place to prevent this economic meltdown were removed by the Republican congress and BUSH. Ninety days in to his presidency and they think that Obama is responsible for this? How fair is that? He inherited a sinking ship and it seems to me that it's only fair that he's given a chance and a decent amount of time to try and turn things around. Don't forget that all these banks getting bailed out were ALL giant Republican party contributors, not Democrats.

So far as I can tell, Obama has accepted that batton and kept running- only faster.

I must admit to some doubt in your claim that the bailed out banks never donated a cent to any democrat, so I looked up googled Barney Frank and conributions from AIG. The second link:
Light shed on AIG as a political cash cow : World & Nation : The Buffalo News

Here are a few juicy quotes:
"Dodd has accepted $280,238 in campaign cash from AIG’s political committee and employees in the last 20 years."

"Schumer has accepted $111,875 from AIG donors over two decades."

"Baucus collected $90,000 from those connected to the insurance giant that has received more than $170 billion in federal bailout funds."

"Obama was one of four people who ran for the presidency who ranked in the top five of recipients of AIG employee and political committee donations over the last two decades. He pulled in $107,332, mostly for his presidential race. "

Oddly, Franks take wasn't listed, but Obama? Who would of thought?

Each President is the representative of the GOVERNMENT and it doesn't matter which party D or R (and someday maybe I or C) is in charge - the government has been growing too large and too oppressive for far too long. This started clear back with the first President Roosevelt and if you don't believe me - read a couple of older history books, don't get the current ones, they might not be totally unobjective.

The government is growing into what our Founding Fathers were trying to avoid - a Rulers government with power coming from the top, rights being granted at the will of the ruler and the people depending on the largesse of the government in order to live their lives.

That was the reason behind the first tea parties, they were really protests against the oppressive gov't of King George. The tea tax was just an example of the oppression and was the burr under the saddle to get the people riled up enough to act.

If you object to the policies of any of the recent Presidents, and or of Congress - I don't care what initial you have on your voter registration card - join with the other AMERICANS that feel the same way and let yourself be counted as caring enough to join the protest.

I read all sorts of different news sources. But this column does source the "tea party" push accurately and makes me wonder why so many people just blindly follow along.

The odd thing, as the article points out, is that taxes have only been raised on the very richest among us and even then still at 10% LESS than when Reagan was president. It's obvious to me that the millionaires and billionaires out there would like the middle class to continue to support them. AND THEN they try to get us "underlings" to protest for them.

I find that to be "grinding the faces of the poor" at its worst.

I agree somewhat
Report Comment by winter1 @ 11:33am - Wed Apr 15th, 2009
but I think there is more to it than that.
California is a great example of the problem. When the govenernment expands and creates more debt, eventually it falls to the people to pay for it. Californians are being taxed out of their minds because of their State's debt.
Our government continues to spend at an alarming rate and there is no way that the middle class won't be saddled with paying for this. Both parties are to blame. Both have had their shot at controlling the purse strings in the congress. Neither has changed the course we are on and it is getting worse at a much more rapid pace. I think our nation as a whole is following the same pattern as California.
If the middle class doesn't stand up now and make our voices heard, the time will come when we no longer have one.

I understand your point
Report Comment by Greenly @ 11:43am - Wed Apr 15th, 2009
(and thank you so much for an intelligent discussion!) but I think it's also important for people to understand who the voices are behind these things before just blindly going along.

So many of our issues today were created by the very people who are now "pulling the strings" of us common folk, trying to get US to take responsibility for what were their mistakes. Our taxes have not been raised - only the taxes of the very rich have been raised. That's the purpose of these tea parties- to get their taxes lowered and, by default, ours then raised back up - and the rich are behind their inception.

That many are also protesting the growth of government in these times, in addition to a perceived (and unreal for the average taxpayer) tax raise, is an offshoot of the original purpose, but still valuable, at least to those who protest. (But note, it will still be called a "tea party" in the media, indicating a tax issue.)

You are so right that "both parties are to blame" for the current mess. Most fail to even discuss the issue rationally, hotly blaming the opposition (whichever) instead. So thanks again for a reasoned discussion!

taxes are going up for the "average taxpayer"
Report Comment by darlin85 @ 2:08pm - Wed Apr 15th, 2009
If you think that taxes have not increased and are not going to increase for the average taxpayer then perhaps you should do some research beyond the NY times for so-called "news sources". Taxes have been raised in every conceivable way, except income taxes because the administration and congress said they wouldn't and they don't want to anger the middle class "main street" folks that elected them.

If you smoke, your taxes have gone up. If you drive a car, your taxes have gone up. If you ride the bus, your taxes have gone up. If you do any of the major middle class activities, like owning a phone, purchasing a home, giving to charity, etc etc you have or will soon see your taxes go up significantly. You seem to be keen on looking into who is supposedly behind the tea parties, but not too keen on really looking at the hidden tax increases and those that MUST come down at some point to pay for doubling the budget of the nation this year. Who is going to pay for that? You think the rich will? Even if they do, you think that's okay? I don't. I hope that one day I can be in the above a quarter million income range. I am working hard to acheive the American dream. But when you tax individuals who are working hard, creating jobs, and giving to our nation's charities at a more than 50% overall rate - what's the point in working so hard??

I do foresee that I will at least reach that goal sooner than expected. The unavoidable inflation will mean that my current $40K per year income will be the $250K equivalent in just a few short years.
(show comment)
I think most people
Report Comment by Greenly @ 2:25pm - Wed Apr 15th, 2009
are protesting taxes they assume are coming from the Obama administration, which, as you state, have actually been lowered, as promised, for the middle class.

I totally agree with your anger concerning the "hidden taxes" and I share that anger. If these tea parties were aimed at the right target, that would be just fine. I am quite angry that the Utah State legislature budgeted for so much junk this year, and raised our car registration fees, etc.

I'm glad you will reach your goal. We are nearing retirement and have lost most of our 401k. So do not mistake that I am a happy camper about all this - I am extremely angry at those who brought it about, through greed and stupidity.

But I contend that the reason we are hearing about this issue (in the form of tea parties) is also because the very rich want their tax break back - even though they retain more now than they did under Reagan. I find that to be obscene, since their tax break lasted eight years and the middle class paid for it.

And I don't for a minute think that the far-right has nothing to gain in all this, politically. I'll say it yet again - if you want to know the truth in the news, you must go to ALL sources, not just the ones that seemingly match your ideology. I have worked for newspapers - ALL news sources have bias. If you do not understand that, then you are not getting the truth. To get the truth, you put it together as you read ALL the different sources.

Thanks for joining the discussion in such a reasoned manner. I really enjoy a good discussion that does not devolve into name calling and obscene one-liners!

Your source, Michelle Malkin (a conservative blogger) talks about Keli Carender, who is organizing Seattle's April 15 protest. It is probably true that Keli is herself "innocent" of the big names behind the idea, but she did not start the idea itself. There are probably many, many innocent people who will both start their own local protests and attend those same events. But it is vitally important to see the men behind the machinations, just like in Oz.

If we see them and still don't care, that's one thing. But if we think that this is a "grass roots" movement, and that those behind this whole thing have nothing to gain (and, in fact, they have A LOT to gain, financially and politically), then we need to be educated before we simply "join up."

That's my thinking, anyway.

"Last but not least: it turns out that the tea parties don’t represent a spontaneous outpouring of public sentiment. They’re AstroTurf (fake grass roots) events, manufactured by the usual suspects. In particular, a key role is being played by FreedomWorks, an organization run by Richard Armey, the former House majority leader, and supported by the usual group of right-wing billionaires. And the parties are, of course, being promoted heavily by Fox News."

This paragraph was the only one that didn't seem condescending or riduculing, but that's what you can expect with opinion columns.

As I don't actually watch Fox News, I do listen to Glenn Beck and saw his episode where he introduced THE912PROJECT.COM. I am in total agreement that they are being promoted heavily by Fox news. I guess if you have a talk show host urging you to do it doesn't mean it's any less grass roots. Glenn's web site is giving people tips on how to organize such events and encouraging people to meet and discuss the country with their neighbors. Sounds pretty grass roots to me.

One other thing Glenn has spoken of, with regard to getting neighbors together, is that as part of teh media, he subscribed to recieve the high tech text announcement of Obama's VP choice. No on a list as a supposed supporter he recieves e-mail from the administration telling people to do the same thing. Organize yourselves. Talk to neighbors about my policies.

I don't blame him for doing it, and I'm certainly not ridiculing, marginalizing, or painting them as right wing extremists that need to be watched over.

I'm not saying that these protests are a bad thing (if one were near, I might even attend one), but I am saying that we need to be very careful about who actually benefits from these things. I'm saying, those who benefit will not be the middle class. I'm saying, those who benefit will be the wealthy, who want their taxes back where Bush had them. I'm saying that a "tax reduction" will happen only at the expense of the middle class.

Maybe it would be better to say, "be careful what you ask for" when protesting taxes, power being where it is, that is, the wealthy.

(And, of course, as you noted, the left-wing media/columnists can be just as offensive as its right-wing counterparts... We just have to find the truth somewhere in the middle and not assume that either side portrays the truth accurately...!)

Report Comment by Another Thinker @ 1:37pm - Wed Apr 15th, 2009
Perhaps would should be more focused on what is right than how policies are going to affect our pocket book or another's pocket book.

That's why the tea parties should be able governing from principles rather than taxes. If we all voted our pocket book, we would vote for whoever would tax others and give us entitlements, when what is right is let us be accountable for our actions- let us succeed or fail.

If only we knew how detrimental to our psyche and our society voting our pocket book is and acted/voted accordingly.

It's a real issue, isn't it?
Report Comment by Greenly @ 1:58pm - Wed Apr 15th, 2009
While many on both sides simply want to reduce these issues to slogans, there are in fact people's lives at stake in this country and all over the world.

It's difficult for us to understand just how intertwined our economy is now with the whole world. If our markets had been "allowed" to crash, millions in poorer countries would have died of starvation, as a result. And, if we think it's bad now, many, many, many more here in this country would have been out of work, homeless, and potentially starving as well, had we just let things fall apart. Vulnerable populations (the elderly, the disabled, the very young) would have also been at terrible risk.

So asking what is "right" is a very penetrating question.

Angry but not angry enough. Obama ran on change and nothing has changed. We are still spending more than we have, there is government corruption, tax fraud from higher ups while the IRS looks the other way, there is growing govt and lies. It is coming at us from both sides.
5 yrs ago we were frustrated.
4 yrs ago we were annoyed.
3 yrs ago we were mad.
2 yrs ago we were mad enough to complain.
1 yr ago we were getting angrier but hoping that a new president and a new administration might make things better regardless of who it was.
6 months ago we started calling our congressmen telling them to vote against bailing out Wall Street, against passing the stimulus bills. There were so many calls and emails that the system was overloaded and failed in Washington. And they voted for it anyway.
Today, we are done with both sides. Bush (R) betrayed our trust, the Republican congress betrayed our trust, The Democratic congress betrayed our trust and now the Dem president is betraying our trust. We can't trust any of them.

To make this about Rs and Ds or even about taxes is simplistic and wrong. It is about so much more. It has been brewing for years.

You really ought to do the math. The 5% rate is a flat rate, but not a flat tax. The rate is NOT applied to the same base for everyone, and the base rate that it is applied to changed to cause an INCREASE in taxes to many. There are so many credits for so many pet projects that the rate is really meaningless. It is pathetic that it is even being called anything close to "flat". Don't be deceived. The state tax system is in no way perfect, but it is better than many states.

With a flat tax some will pay more. Those that pay more are those that before paid little or nothing. I have no problem with the tax burden being spread to all. This will in the end result in a lower tax rate for all and more public outcry anytime tax money is wasted.

If in society we have a large percentage of the population that does not pay taxes, they will not be outraged when that money is wasted. In the United states around 40% do not pay Federal Income Tax.

Today in the United States a family with $50,000 annual income, a house payment, and 4 kids will not pay any Federal Income Tax.

you might want to recheck your figures. The national revenues did not go up and taxes did not go down. He did reduce taxes in his first year of presidency, but then got all sneaky and introduced a tax hike 3 yrs later. The only time federal revenues grew, and the economy for that matter, was under Clinton. He raised taxes on the top 1% and lowered them for those below that. It grew national revenues while he also shrank the size of government. Reagan just grew the size of the government and also grew the size of deficits year over year. As Dick Cheney said, "Deficits don't matter."

You really should back your hazy facts with some citations...

Bush did some serious hazy accounting to justify the growth in deficits. Instead of including costs in the overall budget, he would ask for supplemental funding later on. This made him look politically good...but in the end did the same. Reagan also did this kind of fuzzy accounting to look like a cost slasher when actually raising the cost of doing business.

1981 Federal revenue: $599 billion. 1988 Federal revenue: $909 billion. So Federal revenue didn't go up at all? Of course it did, you are being deliberately misleading in your definition of "revenue" and only calling it "revenue" when it is a surplus over spending. I don't deny at all that the deficits went up as well during the Reagan and Bush years, never have done so. And I don't deny that furthering the Clinton era policies into Bush's term would have been been better for the economy than what ended up happening. But then it's easy and convenient to ignore everything or play hindsight quarterback with that happened from Sept. 2001 onwards that led to arguably wasteful spending. What I don't hear now is any opposition from the left to Obama's intent to spend us into even more debt now. It all suddenly is reduced to "blame Bush for it" even though you all screeched like cats dropped in a washing machine any time someone tried to blame the 2000-2001 slowdown on Clinton.

If the goal is to blame, then at least show some intellectual honesty and acknowledge that most of the politicians that have been in Washington DC over the past 30+ years have had some influence in our current state of affairs. And our current congress and administration isn't doing anything to change it. Perhaps we can argue if the enormous expenditures will actually stimulate the economy or not, but I don't see how anyone can argue that the Bush administration and the Obama administration have both increased the size and scope of our government. Big government requires big money and the bill for that will come back to us and our children.

Your examples:

I don't want to run up trillions of dollars of debt and sell it to China

I don't want union elections to abolish the secret ballot they have now

I want the illegal immigrants to stop flowing into our country

No one defending child pornography should hold any position in the Justice Department

No doctor should be forced to perform any procedure against their conscience

After I've said all that, I'm not sure what you were trying to say in your post. Are you for or against these principles? I usually understand what you are trying to say and I typically disagree with most of it, so I'm a bit baffled here.

Who sold our national debt to foriegn countries?
Ronald Reagan, the poster boy for the neocon movement.

I don't get the union election thing at all, that is the unions business, who want to take there right away?

The illegal immigration issue has been a problem for along time and the republicans have done nothing about it, I am amazed they didn't use NAFTA, perhaps they researched it and found out it was the republicans who pushed it through.

What is with the child porn statement? Why don't they cite their source.

Who is forcing a doctor to perform abortions?

The Tea Party movement fails to provide any information on their sources.

What I am saying n my post is this Tea Party movement is a scam, it is full of lies and it is typical of the neocon movement.

The Union Election Thing: Right now the ballot for whether or not a union can represent workers at a company is private. No one can know how a worker will vote. Certain democrat leaders want to change that. The threat is that if the vote is known to all, the union representatives will be able to target those employees who do not vote for the union and harass them.

Report Comment by Agoraphobic Kleptomaniac @ 11:53am - Wed Apr 15th, 2009
"Right now, there are two ways to form a union: majority sign-up or a secret ballot election. And management gets to decide which is used. The Employee Free Choice Act would protect the same two ways of joining a union (majority sign-up or a secret ballot election), but leave it up to workers to decide which is used."

TheHill.com - True democracy in the workplace

"Many of the tactics used to intimidate employees are legal. However, because federal labor law contains no possibility of punitive fines, prison or any other type of sanction, employers break the law at will. With private sector we can choose what we pay for and what we get, with higher taxes and more public services we are forced to pay for something and yet have no guarantee that we will receive sufficient for our needs, or anything at all.

Even the French President is able to see through the media's BS when it comes to Obama. British and French journalists are at least able to call Obama what he is; an inexperienced nobody who's got nothing to offer the rest of the world except rhetoric.

World Agenda: Nicolas Sarkozy puts Barack Obama in the doghouse - Times Online

Here's an excerpt from the article: "The American President's call to free the world of the menace of a nuclear nightmare" was hot air, Mr Sarkozy's diplomatic staff told him in a report. "It was rhetoric – not a speech on American security policy but an export model aimed at improving the image of the United States," they said. Most of Mr Obama's proposals had already been made by the Bush administration and Washington was dragging its feet on disarmament and treaties against nuclear proliferation, the leaked report said.

Personal pique and French politics are also behind the souring of Mr Sarkozy's self-promoted honeymoon with the United States. On the personal side, the French President is needled by the adulation for an unproven US leader whose stardom has eclipsed what he sees as his established record as a world troubleshooter. "The President is annoyed by what he sees as the naivety and the herd mentality of the media," said a journalist who is privy to Elysée thinking.

The tax party was not about protesting the tax system, it was about runaway government spending, nationalizing public companies and downright fiscal irresponsibility. Lets get back to a Republic, away from a dictatorship!

I just came from the protest, and it's not just about TAXES
Report Comment by A.B.P. @ 1:58pm - Wed Apr 15th, 2009
It's about our elected leaders passing legislation to reward big campaign contributors. It's about huge increases in the Federal Debt.
It's about the ruling elite thinking they know better than us, what is good for us. So we should give them all our money and they can decide what to spend it on.

Listen to the voice of the people, Washington and SLC.

I don't want a bailout. I don't need the government to wipe my nose or my b..
I don't need a politician to keep me safe from global warming, etc.
I have a job and I can pay my mortgage payment, but I am not inclined to pay someone else's. Especially if they shouldn't have bought a house that they couldn't afford in the first place.

Stop spending my children's and my grandchildren's future on community action programs, on bailouts to companies whose executives drove them into the ground, or on subsidizing mortgages for people who still can't afford to buy a house and still don't have the financial stability to keep up the payments.

Stop devaluing our money. If you understand Inflation then you understand that this is a hidden tax that affects everyone.

there's change coming but not the kind that we have been hearing about from out politicians.

Can you hear us now?
