Personally, did not like Zwan. Thought it was pretty much more of the bleh Billy on Prozac sounding affair we've been getting since post-original SP line up. I much prefer Zeitgeist over Zwan. But hey, what the hell do I know?

the greatness of Zwan begins and ends with "Chrysanthemum," one of the most meaningful & powerful songs Bill's ever written

If you said that then surely that song sucks.

"Billy Corgan revealed in a new interview with GaterRocks.com that he hopes to release 65 unreleased Zwan songs as part of a Zwan box set in the near future."

Fairy tales and time in whales
Substitutes for sin
It takes some life to find the light within
Whistle past the lane, lover
Whistle past the lane
'Cause love's forever strange
Nestle on the moon, sunshine
Nestle on the moon
Should you hear that faint murmur
Of what love might do

Seven stars that shine
In my mind, oh my mind
I'll take you with me where I climb
In my mind, oh my mind

And if I'm wrong I'm right
I'm never gonna lose you
If I'm wrong I'm right
Take me to your life

Summertime's the only child
Summertime's the only child this night
You want to brace the golden fool
Let's make this right

Nightingales and nursery crimes
Twins that spark the charts
It takes some trust to find a trust apart
Whistle past the lane, lover
Whistle past the lane
'Cause love's forever strange
Nestle on the sun, starlight
Nestle on the sun
Should you hear that faint murmur
Of what love has done

Seven stars that weep
In my sleep, oh in my sleep
I'll take you with me where I keep
In my sleep, oh in my sleep
And if I'm wrong I'm right
I'm never gonna loose you
If I'm wrong I'm right
Take me to your life
All you need is you, lover
All you need is you
All you need is you, lover
So please need me too
What you need is love, stranger
What you need is love
When your love needs it's danger
Please let me through when I've got you

For me the acoustic/semi-acoustic Zwan shows are what I consider his best work since 2000. The electric stuff less so but still mostly great ( but I've never understood the love for Chrysanthenum, even if Jimmy does kick ass on it). The studio production kinda sucked the life out of some otherwise good songs.

The problem was that Billy attempted to use the band as a way of recapturing his lost fame.

Here's why Billy was a fucking idiot re: Zwan...

The original 4 members built a solid fanbase from their early club shows. The band actually had an element of 'indie cred', drawing fans of both Chavez and Slint. At this point, you'd assume all the band would need to do is go into the studio and capture some of that live energy and showcase the best songs from their live sets.

But no...

Billy had to assert his idiotic "commercial album then art album" master plan and recorded an artificial, commercial sounding album that both alienated existing fans and was ignored by mainstream audiences. It was the musical equivalent of a cold call from a telemarketer.

Even Dave Grohl restarted his post-Nirvana career with a modest album that had no intention of being a hit. I'm sure Zwan could have easily been a critical and commercial success if it was allowed to grow organically over the course of a few albums.

To add insult to artistic injury, Billy attempted the "commercial album then art album" trick again with Monuments and Day For Night -and again destroyed a band and failed miserably.

It's almost as if your plan was always a bad idea, Billy.

the power of "Chrysanthemum" is as much contextual as it is the song itself. there are a few recordings of it, but that one from Pomona that we have video of is the first song Billy played on stage after the breakup of the Pumpkins less than a year earlier. They waste no time with this immense power pop rocker, & the simplicity & positivity of the lyrics is really unique in his body of work... "yesterday / we were going somewhere" ... it's an uncharacteristically reflective song where he's dealing with the death of his life's work, BUT rather than wallowing in it, it's a wistful remembrance, AND most importantly, the song is about moving forward. Musically, it's a major key & uplifting rewrite of Jellybelly. "Living makes me sick / so sick I wish I'd die" versus "A flower's still a flower crushed to dust inside my hand." it just stands out as remarkably mature in sentiment, and I think that comes thru in the music & lyrics. and it's all the more tragic that we know that positive attitude wouldn't last long at all.

I like that acoustic "Hideout Compilation" stuff that's up on ThePumpkins.net, but I've listened to their actual proper release, like, once, and it was pretty boring.

I liked "Of a Broken Heart," tho. The rest sounded like Christian rock.

the christian vibe is kinda nice i think. the songs aren't terrible (esp compared to the recent shit) but they're so lacking compared to the 2001 stuff

"Mary Star of the Sea" is an astonishingly underrated album. Musically diverse, expertly played by the best line-up Corgan has ever played with - and does not contain a single track that doesn't fit. It has always reminded me of "Revolver" by The Beatles, in both intent and excellence of execution. A breakup record that choses to make the case for why the lady in question should reconsider and stay, rather than wallowing in despair. I wish there were many more Zwan records. FoolOfaTook - are you seriously saying you don't like that driving bass-riff that is the basis for "Settle Down"?

I remember lining up in Wellington in 2001, outside the hole in the wall, to see Shihad play, and the only other tr00 Pumpkins fan in Wellington was telling me about how Billy was starting up a new band. "Yeah?" I said. "Yeah. He's called it.... Zwan." And we both looked at each other and rolled our eyes.

I wanted to like it, I wanted it to be better than that stupid name. But it was too late. There were too many other interesting albums coming out that year and Zwan just made me cringe.

I'm placing all bets on some unreleased Zwan stuff making the rounds if /when the reunion happens. Ever since Bill said he didn't want to do the box and that he and Jimmy might rework it into Pumpkins tracks....yeah.

Yeah

Find a download of the MSotS pre-master tracks if you can. The tracks sound way better without the terrible mastering that makes everything sound artificial and shit.
