Without a doubt. A reunion like this means big-time money. They have strategic ways to roll out these kind of tours and ways to set up the narrative. D'arcy doing this is a huge fuck up to the plans. I wouldn't be surprised if she gets sued.

I'm disappointed though. I figured that they wouldn't bother with any reunion hype if it wasn't going to be the original 4. Essentially all it is is James Iha joining the current lineup for a tour. It'll be nice to see and all, but it's a bit anti-climatic.

I have a feeling that SP INC saw the big success that Guns N Roses had with taking the half measure approach and thought they could have big success by doing the same. It's a harder sell though cause D'arcy was such an important part of the image of the band. Now of course it's just gonna be some other random bimbo up there to fill the eye-candy female bassist role.

I don't know if he ever said "The reunion will only be Me, Jimmy, James and D'arcy, No more No less." What he did say was he would only reunite for the right rea$on$

But you definitely got the vibe it WAS going to be the original 4, even without Jeff!

He was definitely heavily teasing the idea of Jimmy James D'arcy, but it was never concrete.

And it was definitely never "No D'arcy, No more Pumpkins."

I won't believe any of these rumors until Pitchfork reader Byron Barnes verifies them as true.

People get older. They adopt more influences, and frankly, become better musicians as they go on in life.

You know... just remember... somewhere the poor guitarist from Limp Bizkit is out there playing "Nookie" at some casino gig. He is a master guitar player who cites Bjork as his favorite artist. He probably has been listening to a lot of John Coltrane and Delta blues music. Yet, he is out there playing "Nookie" night after night.

He wrote some horrid rap/rock riffs when he was 21, and now wears it around his neck like a 1000 ton anchor.

People want this version of SP to mimic what the poster looked like on their bedroom wall, but it really dosen't matter at this point. They aren't a band anymore. You can't have more. The 28-year-old Billy Corgan in his ZERO shirt, screaming the lyrics to an overflow audience isn't going to ever happen again.
No one was expecting to see Lollapalooza type energy from a reunion of these guys. People were just excited at the prospect of seeing the original lineup back on stage and playing music together again. Guns N Roses sounded great on their tour and it's harder to play that kind of music with energy than it is Smashing Pumpkins and the GNR guys are all older.

Bottom line, If it's just Iha joining the current lineup for a tour, that's lovely. But they better not market it as some kind of reunion tour. With a group like Smashing Pumpkins, it has to be the real deal or don't even bother.

I'll still check out a show on the tour and probably be stoked though... But meh... Not what it could have been.

ITT: Lots of fans who miss D'arcy more than they usually admit. I get it. Me too.

But if Jimmy, Billy, and James go on a tour playing Plainsong but louder, with new SP tracks slotted into the Billy solo stuff, and Jeff on third guitar when necessary, that will be a delightful show. It will be ok to go to that and find some joy. We don't want the 90's energy back, we want a new energy, instead of the stale shit they've been blaring out prior to the Plainsong tours.

Even if she didn’t play live, having her in the studio contributing or filtering Billy’s ideas - and just having her on stage, would be significant.

To be honest, my dream band would be Billy, Jimmy, Jeff, James and Nicole - I really enjoyed her style playing with the band.

However I have a problem with how Billy's been dealing with the reunion. At this point, I wouldn't care if D'Arcy playing is a little rusty, you wouldn't care much about it while you have 3 guitars playing along, but I'm not sure if she is able to play in band in a professional way. It would be sad and unfair to put her through this.

Billy shouldn't be speculating about it and, If the article is true, they should've stopped the conversation right away, and not 2 or 3 months away from everything (assuming they would need to rehearsal for the summer).

3 guitars is totally unnecessary. It's such a small nuance it would have zero impact on the quality of the show. Bill can play & sing at a high level so it's not needed where many bands use it so the singer can focus on vocals. If D is out I am for MaDM or Nicole or maybe even someone like Kim Deal. Need those sweet female backing vocals.

Another point. Are they going to be playing An ode to no one at 160 BPM or will it be blue skies bring tears version c? Will it be greatest hits with no deviation at all?

"Honestly, this is going to be a bit of a boring answer; I just like the way that it pockets into the music. I play guitar pretty much on top, and so the bass is better laconic. If the bass is too on top, like for example, Melissa Auf der Maur. When she played with us, she played very on top, and it was constantly tripping all over the ****ing guitars. It’s hard to get… the Pumpkins’ sound. If you can bottle it, it’s sort of predicated on the idea the guitars are clearly on top and ahead of the drums; the drums sit in the middle, and the bass is a little back, so it has an impact and wide-scope sound. That’s the sound that I like to hear. Maybe it was developed through playing with D’Arcy and the way she played. I got used to that feeling, and so I’ve looked for that feeling ever since. So, if I found a man who could play like that, I would have no problem putting him in there. Mark Tulin played like that."

They almost added a 3rd guitar for the MCIS tour and have played with 3 guitars before. Zwan was pretty good live as well.

Once you have everything aligned, you can only benefit from it. Besides, you don't need to have the 3 guitars on stage for every single song... They can pretty much alternate. Jeff plays the keys, Billy plays a few other instruments himself.

Disappointed but not surprised. D'arcy has been out of the band and spotlight for so long, that I'm sure most promoters would consider a Billy/James/Jimmy lineup to be a "reunion." Similar, as others pointed out, to how Guns N' Roses have been billed as a reunion with Axl/Duff/Slash. I think Billy has even mentioned in interviews before that he could have gotten much better offers if he'd just added James to the 2007/2008 lineup.

We don't know anything yet. I think it would be understandable if the rest of the group didn't think D'arcy was up to the task, but if she was strung along that does just seem shitty. It seems like she really wanted the gig. I personally think D'arcy could have handled a straight "greatest hits" set. This leads me to believe we may be getting some longer/jammier shows.

It's not hard to learn SP on bass, and it's probably even easier when you're their original bass player.

Billy is recording with Jimmy.

That's all you know.

That's all you need to know.

And that's all that matters.

If they tour with all 4, great.

If you're upset they don't, or disappointed in how billy may or may not be handling things, you have much larger problems to be concerned with.

d'arcy obviously has some health problems, and I'm surprised to see so many people haven't seen in through. I think that 2009 radio station call and some of the stuff she's talked about in her 2016 interview is pretty indicative of it:
Quote:
At one point she asked us why we didn’t ask if she was on drugs (besides her prescription ADHD medication). When we remarked that we’d never expect a truthful answer seeing that she refused to tell us what town she lived in or what her music sounded like, she volunteered that she was “healthier now than she’s ever been in her life.” She did, however, confess that “there are very few drugs that I can do and the ones that I could do stopped working so I stopped using them.”
the 2009 interview sounded very bizarre, she didn't sound quite mentally/emotionally stable. when you add all that up, I don't think you can blame billy or jimmy for choosing to write her off for the tour. besides, who the fuck knows if any of this new new info is true, or what really went on behind the curtains?

Linda Strawberry:

Quote:
I would just throw out there that touring at that level is hard at your body and your emotions and you have to be in top form- and in this cruel meme filed world you also have to have Teflon skin- it's brutal out there. So some people get there and burn up in the sun and disappear. Others adjust. Some thrive. And music is dutiful and you have to be on top form of your game there too. I think it is actually cruel to expect someone to try to jump in the fire when they might not be able to handle it. People should always be put before money or whatever else. Just a thought. Who can handle it? Who is handling it? Who might not be able to handle it?

United States and Tarantula are the best two songs SP or Billy have put out since forever.

So if we can get 2 more of those, or even 1 more, sign me up. Not sure anyone can reasonably hope for much more than that.
