Default Deerhunter

so I'm really late (and I try to avoid the majority of Pitchfork stuff cuz I'm usually bored by it) but I finally got around to listening to these guys.

Just skimmed through their first s/t, all the reviews about it being forgettable are right.

Cryptograms, Flourescent EP, and the Grayscale single are all pretty freakin excellent. I really like the experimental first half of cryp, and all the pop material here is pretty great too.

Microcastle is a let down...up until Nothing Ever Happened (awesome song) it was daring me to fall asleep, and the stuff after is only meh until the awesome rocking at the end of Twilight at Carbon lake.

Weird Era is up next, I hope it's better than Microcastle.

overall I like these guys a lot better than animal collective tho

are we supposed to compare any band to animal collective now?

Also I think microcastle is much better than cryptograms.

i find Microcastle to be good, in patches. Hype largely unfulfilled, though.

I just heard "Nothing Ever Happened" for the first time today and really liked it.

Is the rest of their stuff like this?

no. its their poppiest song. Crytograms the song and the fluorescent grey ep is what they are about

I've listened to microcastle / weird era and Cryptograms, Cryptograms is really kind of meh except for their poppier songs Strange Lights and Hazel St. There weren't a lot of dynamic changes, or interesting melodies, or well-structured songs to me.

Microcastle / Weird Era are quite interesting and cool overall, but the lyrics are often pretty boring, the band definitely doesn't deserve nearly as much hype they get. Agoraphobia is probably my favorite song from either disc, it sounds hypnotically like the Zelda fairy fountain music.

I listened quickly to Microcastle and only really liked the first 2 songs and Nothing Ever Happened.

So far Weird Era is better, but I'm not really loving these guys.

i love microcastle. its my favorite deerhunter record by quite a bit. cryptograms is also pretty solid.

all in all i probably slightly prefer deerhunter over animal collective just because microcastle is my favorite album by either of them with feels being next after that.
