from what i've read most scenesters during the gish era turned their nose at them, mostly because they were 'sell outs', but i think their acid burn-out image played a role. but that more or less turned around during the SD era. their style fit the times a little more

Billy always kind of looked like a dork. But they were cool in their own way. The only thing wrong with the Gish era look is that Billy tucked in his shirts too much. (Reeeally not cool if you're already high waisted, yo.) But everything else - there were a lot of early 90's alternative bands with a variation of that style.

I think the Adore look and the MCIS looks were pretty cool.

I think some of their styles at times were kinda lame at times. But the band members just looked cool together even if they wore some questionable shit.
