I was pointing out that talking about sports is no more or less pointless than talking about this thread's topic.

Isn't getting meta like this even more pointless?

You're hardly ever not snarky, it's just how you are.

do you guys think fb will be phased out completely at any point and/or anything else replace it?

i imagine it would be difficult to replace and could see people abandoning that style of internet-culture altogether before moving onto a "new/better" version

I don't know if it will be replaced but it can't survive forever.

At the moment, it's common for people to have accounts on multiple, single purpose websites like Snapchat or Twitter. Facebook started off as a one-stop shop for all your sharing needs and still tries to be.

Google is even worse with this shit though.

i like twitter because my favorite artists share things instead of just "buy my new album" or "come to my tour dates". with the right accounts, you can get a look at part of their process as well.

that's what i'm asking - will it be replaced or will the concept just wither and die.

when will people realize they are keeping surveillance on themselves?

Linked in is the new Facebook I reckon, but it's all about employment. So it's like Facebook for professionals. They don't post selfies or memes, they just list their jobs so that other people with jobs can see whether or not it's worth hanging out with you, like you know, whether it will help them get another, better job.

It's kinda more honest and more shitty at the same time.

Using and updating Linkedin seems like a big waste of time that could be spent actually looking for jobs and networking with people face-to-face.

Everybody I know, who has a professional job, is on linkedin. You don't use it to network with or arrange drinks with, you use it to work out who to email and say hey we haven't caught up in a while or hey, I was thinking about this professional thing at my professional job and I realized you are a good person to talk to about this, can I shout you a lunch at this new bar downtown so I can pick your brain? Crap like that. Or like hey you and the wife and kids wanna come ova 4 a BBQ? Just bought a new weber we can smoke something, been meaning to invite you over since we finished he renos on the new family area and we also got a dog last month. How are Xavier and anoushka enjoying st Joseph's?

Welcome to your 30s, vixnix. So far two people have added me on linkedin and one is my husband. Nobody wants to hang with a loser like me! I can't help anyon get a job anywhere!

But man through my husband's work we're starting to enter the world of bbqs and he spends way more time schmoozing after work than he ever has before.

It's pretty brutal and demoralizing. Luckily I'm a Christian so I don't have the brainpower to appreciate how truly shitty I should feel about my life, and I'm too busy making playdough for preschoolers and singing kum by ya to them to have time to ruminate on my many life failures. Go me. That rehabilitation was totes successful. Yusssss

linkedin is a place to put your resume and jobs and have connections of personal and professional references at the employers fingertips

i've had friends recruited for employment through linkedin

it is like facebook, but it exists for a reason. yeah you can use it to get beers with your work buddies and ask them "professional questions" that nebulous concept about people giving a shit about work but it's primarily a system

like seriously fucking shut up, you don't even know what you're talking about

Yeah of course it's that...but it is also a way to check out where people are moving to, which new companies etc., and what kind of work they're doing.

People definitely keep an eye on each others' profiles and work out how to keep contact with people who are in useful positions at successful companies. And in higher paying jobs people tend to hire people they like, and recommend people they like, and you can't tell that from a linkedin profile. But going for Friday night drinks somewhere is helpful. If you're looking to secure contracts worth millions of dollars, then you need to be thinking about which people to establish relationships with and keep contact with and endear yourself to. It's fake and crappy but it's human and it's how deals are struck it seems - it's all about making an impression.

Which is exactly like Facebook, except it also involves your income and occupation and not just your weekend lunch preferences and buzzfeed quiz results
