Default Albums/bands/songs that you have a trailblazing and/or maverick opinion about

Bring your A game, tastemasters. Muse anyone?

Im sure the MV haters around here will love this but, My Vitriol practically created a unique wall of sound in their own way and have been imo one the more original bands of the last 10 years, but certainly not in all their songs. I think it is easy to point out that some of the pop ethic has made their versatility seem shallow but I still think they are very underrated and if they manage to hone their more experimental edge with a more varied songwriting approach will be very special (even though I think they are anyway).

i love mv's sound but their songs are so forgettable. they would hardly lose any integrity to focus on writing more memorable and distinguishable songs.

Okay I will just draw a comparison here so you might see where I am coming from. Say I go to listen to a band like MBV, I know exactly the feel that I am going to get from their distinct musical landscapes. Well it is the same with MV for me, their style is just imprinted on me as a unique impression, and it transcends the usual categorisation I could give to other bands I listen to.

I think that some of the pop elements hiccup their distinct tone and imbalance the landscape, drawing them back into more familiar territory with regards to alternative rock. But when they balance it, it's just a beautiful thing... Songs like "Ode to the red queen" and "Under the wheels" are perfectly balanced, but also more of the instrumental songs like "Alpha Waves", "Deadlines" and "Toungetied" give a defining edge to the band. But I could say good things about almost all of their songs because they are to me a band that need to be appreciated fully to realise their creation.

But if you don't see it then I guess you can't appreciate it.

no i agree that finelines is a great album sonically, i like everything on it and it definitely creates a very organic-feeling, immersive world of its own. but i think it lacks some personality because the vocals and and lyrics aren't very strong. som's vocals don't seem to have a very good range and the lyrics are a bit bland imo. as much passion as there is in the music (in a way i think it sounds vaguely machina-esque, it has a similarly dystopian vibe) i don't feel like there's much lyrical substance, which for me leaves finelines lacking direction and i suppose conviction. and sonically artistic records can still have good hooks. wouldn't hurt mv at all.

I think that some of the lyrical substance on the poppier songs is pretty generic and that is one of the facets that hold them back. But I don't really agree on all the lyrics, and even when they are generic they are still not bad lyrics at all imo. Im glad you have given it the effort it deserves, and you do relate things that I see there to but I think you close the door so to speak on something which I completely appreciate. The lyrics, the vocals and the sonic landscapes really go hand in hand imo. It's that shoe-gazey affect that I feel, those continuous mood creating sounds that set the tone with MV. But I still appreciate the more inline side of the band as well.

You said you hadn't heard Between the lines right? I think you should give it a chance. Im not sure you will see more of what you like, but there is definitely more going on there and it branches out from Finelines in a few ways. I'll upload if you want to check it out?

My taste has evolved to the point where all music is meaningless, ultimately being merely a social creation based on an elaborate chain of mimicry, the starting point of this chain being a derivation of sound from the primitive grunts of cavemen. In short, my trailblazing opinion regarding any band you listen to is that they suck, and create music logically equivalent to each and every other band on earth.

Are there actually people who use the word organic to describe a band? I must be missing something.

yeah, like "important" it's a nebulous buzzword used to assert music opinion while minimising risk of having to explain oneself

gah, here we go:

Radiohead = boring as shit
Metallica are, and always have been, shit (this isnt really too upsetting to people here, but for people into metal its pretty offensive)

mostly its all negative actually. i really dont care about/dislike: Queen, The Beatles, The Ramones, The Rolling Stones, more than half of Bob Dylan's output, The Velvet Underground after 20 minutes of listening to them once every 5 months, lots of Joy Division's output.

oh yeah: Glass is a wanker, Eno is a genius.
