Default Republican hypocrisy alert:

"Explicit questions in instant messages have reportedly been linked to Rep. Mark Foley who resigned from Congress today. The messages were sent to a teenage congressional page. Earlier, a former page described e-mails he received from the lawmaker as "sick." Foley apparently sent the e-mails in August 2005, when the male page was 16 years old, an ethics watchdog group said." http://www.cnn.com/

Foley was one of the foremost critics in the House of child pornography. Foley was chairman of the House Caucus on Missing and Exploited Children. He introduced a bill in 2002 to outlaw websites featuring sexually suggestive images of preteen children, saying that "these websites are nothing more than a fix for pedophiles."[7] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Fo...exual_offenses

I agree that his being a republican led to his hypocrisy, if not to his pedophilia. Now I no longer trust middle age white politicians who do immoral things that they do not disclose, a group that can only be identified as republicans.

I don't think his political party has to do with his sick decisions. all i'm saying is from the party who tries to scare people about democrats being immoral or "godless" as ms. coulter likes to say, i find it strange that with delay, cunningham, foley and such stealing from the people or pestering underage persons, (or throwing out racist speech) that many, not all, but many on the right act righteous and moral when they are doing exactly what they are preaching against.

if one isn't a moral person oneself, then shut the hell up and don't tell me how to live my life or call me "godless" because i don't stand with the evildoers within one's own party. no one is perfect, so stop acting sanctimonious - that's what i have to say to some members of the gop (not all).

Maybe the republican party contains all the liars. Or maybe almost all people who seek to be in positions of power have a tendency to lie to further their interests. You might call them politicians

Foley was my rep.

I currently have no voice in the House because my representative wanted to talk to a 16 year old about jacking himself off on the internet.

What a world.

GOP leaders knew of Foley e-mail in '05

© 2006 The Associated Press

WASHINGTON — GOP leaders admit their offices have known for months that a Florida Republican congressman was sending inappropriate e-mails to a boy who had worked as a page in the House of Representatives.

The office of House Speaker Dennis Hastert, who earlier said he'd learned about the e-mails only last week, acknowledged that aides referred the matter to the authorities last fall. They said they were only told the messages were "over-friendly."

Rep. Thomas Reynolds, who heads the House Republican election effort, said Saturday he told Hastert months ago about concerns that a fellow Republican lawmaker, Rep. Mark Foley, had sent inappropriate messages to a teenage boy.

Reynolds, a Republican from New York, is defending himself from Democrats who say he did too little to protect the boy.

Foley quit Congress on Friday after ABC News questioned him about the e-mails to a former congressional page and about sexually suggestive instant messages to other pages.

"The improper communications between Congressman Mark Foley and former House Congressional pages is unacceptable and abhorrent. It is an obscene breach of trust," Hastert, R-Ill., Majority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, and Majority Whip Roy Blunt, R-Mo., said Saturday in a written statement.

The Republican leaders said it is their duty to ensure House pages are safe. They said they are creating a toll-free hot line for pages and their families to call to confidentially report any incidents, and will consider adopting new rules on communications between lawmakers and pages.

The boy who received the e-mails was 16 in the summer of 2005 when he worked in Congress as a page. After the boy returned to his Louisiana home, the congressman e-mailed him. The teenager thought the messages were inappropriate, particularly one in which Foley asked the teen to send a picture of himself.

(10-01) 04:00 PDT Washington -- Top House Republicans knew for months about e-mail traffic between Rep. Mark Foley and a former teenage page, but kept the matter secret and allowed Foley, R-Fla., to remain head of a congressional caucus on children's issues, Republican lawmakers said Saturday.

The exchanges began with what Republicans now describe as an "over friendly" e-mail message from Foley to the unidentified teenager. But news reports about the exchanges have led to the disclosure of e-mail correspondence with other former pages in which the discussions became more and more sexually explicit. Shortly after he was confronted by ABC News on Friday about the subject, Foley, who represented a south Florida district, resigned from the House.

The revelations set off a political upheaval, with Democrats and some Republicans alike calling for a full investigation of Foley's conduct and whether House leaders did enough to look into it. Members of the Republican leadership sought Saturday to detail how they had handled the case in an effort to defuse the matter, even as it was emerging as an issue in congressional races.

The page worked for Rep. Rodney Alexander, R-La. Among those who also became aware of the communication in the fall of 2005 between Foley and the 16-year-old were Rep. John Boehner, the majority leader, and Rep. Thomas Reynolds of New York, chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee. Reynolds said in a statement Saturday that he had also personally raised the issue with Speaker Dennis Hastert earlier this year. Hastert had previously said he was not aware until last week of inappropriate behavior by Foley.

"Despite the fact that I had not seen the e-mails in question and Mr. Alexander told me that the parents didn't want the matter pursued, I told the speaker of the conversation Mr. Alexander had with me," Reynolds said.

Republican insiders said Reynolds spoke out because he was angry that Hastert appeared willing to let him take the blame for the party leadership's silence about concerns raised last year regarding Foley's interactions with the teenager.

A House GOP leadership aide, who spoke to the Washington Post on condition of anonymity for fear of losing his job, said Reynolds realizes he has taken a shot at his top leader, but it was understandable.

"This is what happens when one member tries to throw another member under a bus," the aide told the Post.

In a chronology of the incident released later Saturday, the speaker's office said Hastert did not recall any such discussion and had no previous knowledge of the matter. "While the speaker does not explicitly recall this conversation, he has no reason to dispute Congressman Reynolds' recollection that he reported to him on the problem and its resolution," a statement from Hastert's office said.

The statement said senior staff members in the speaker's office first learned of the e-mail messages from Alexander's office in the fall of 2005 and took steps to investigate.

Aides to the speaker and other congressional Republican leaders said the messages brought to their attention -- described as "over friendly" -- were much less explicit than others that came to light after ABC News disclosed the first e-mail correspondence. In those messages, Foley asked about the well-being of the boy, a Monroe, La., resident, after Hurricane Katrina and requested a photograph.

Confronted by ABC News on Friday with more graphic e-mail, Foley resigned.

Both Republican and Democratic lawmakers said Saturday that Congress and the public deserved a full report on Foley's dealings with the pages, who are high school students who serve as runners and perform other duties. They said there should also be an inquiry into the leadership's knowledge of his activities and its response.

Rep. Christopher Shays, R-Conn., said any leader who had been aware of Foley's behavior and failed to take action should step down. "If they knew or should have known the extent of this problem, they should not serve in leadership," Shays said.

On Saturday night, the House Republican leadership issued a joint statement that characterized the communications between Foley, 52, and the former page as "unacceptable and abhorrent."

"His immediate resignation must now be followed by the full weight of the criminal justice system," said the statement from Hastert, Boehner and the majority whip, Roy Blunt.

According to lawmakers and the speaker's office, the page who received the e-mail messages forwarded the one in which Foley asked for his picture, to a colleague in Alexander's office, repeatedly calling it "sick" and saying it "freaked me out."

Alexander called the boy's parents, who, he said Saturday, told him they did not want to pursue the matter but wanted Foley to stop.

Alexander's office also contacted staff members in Hastert's office for guidance on what to do. According to the speaker's account, his aides put Alexander's staff in contact with the clerk of the House, who oversees the page program. The clerk, who at the time was Jeff Trandahl, referred the matter to Rep. John Shimkus, R-Ill., chairman of the House Page Board, in late 2005, a spokesman for Shimkus said.

Trandahl and Shimkus confronted Foley, who assured them nothing inappropriate had occurred.

"Congressman Shimkus and the clerk made it clear that to avoid even the appearance of impropriety and at the request of the parents, Congressman Foley was to immediately cease any communication with the young man," the speaker's statement said.

On Saturday, Shimkus' spokesman, Steve Tomaszewski, said, "Obviously Foley lied about the other e-mails."

Carl Forti, a spokesman for Reynolds, said the congressman became aware of contact between Foley and the young page this past spring, when Alexander brought it to his attention. Forti said that Alexander had told Reynolds of an e-mail exchange between Foley and the page, but that he did not show Reynolds the e-mail messages and their contents.

Strategists for both parties said it was too early to tell what impact the furor might have on congressional elections now five weeks away but said at a minimum it could lower the already dismal public view of incumbents and discourage conservative voters.

It directly affected the race for Foley's seat. Tim Mahoney, the Democrat who had been running an uphill race against Foley, accused the Republican leadership of covering up for him.

"It's now clear from all the reports coming in from across the country that the Republican leadership team has been well aware of this problem with the pages for well over a year," Mahoney said. "It looks to me that it was more important to hold onto a seat and to hold onto power than to take care of our children."

At the Justice Department, an official said that there was no investigation under way but that the agency had "real interest" in examining the circumstances to see if any crimes were committed.

The Washington Post contributed to this report.

This is bullshit!!!! Those kids were some damn terrorists! We should be honoring Foley for exposing those kids for what they are. He just set up those kids to show that they would attack the republican party and terrorize this country by allowing people who hate freedom to win the elections this November. Bravo Foley, brilliant plan!

Hastert requests criminal probe of Foley
By JOHN HEILPRIN, Associated Press Writer
October 1

WASHINGTON - House Speaker Dennis Hastert requested Sunday that the Justice Department conduct an investigation into former Rep. Mark Foley (news, bio, voting record)'s electronic messages to teenage boys — a lurid scandal that has put House Republicans in political peril.

"As Speaker of the House, I hereby request that the Department of Justice conduct an investigation of Mr. Foley's conduct with current and former House pages to determine to what extent any of his actions violated federal law," Hastert, R-Ill., wrote in a letter to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

The White House and Democratic leaders in Congress also called Sunday for a criminal probe. White House counselor Dan Bartlett called the allegations against Foley shocking, but said President Bush hadn't learned of Foley's inappropriate e-mails to a 16-year-old boy and instant messages to other boys before the news broke last week.

"There is going to be, I'm sure, a criminal investigation into the particulars of this case," Bartlett said. "We need to make sure that the page system is one in which children come up here and can work and make sure that they are protected."

Foley, R-Fla., quit Congress on Friday after the disclosure of the e-mails he sent to a former congressional page and sexually suggestive instant messages he sent to other high school pages.

Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid of Nevada called the Foley case "repugnant, but equally as bad is the possibility that Republican leaders in the House of Representatives knew there was a problem and ignored it to preserve a congressional seat this election year."

Reid said the case should be handled outside Congress.

"Under laws that Congressman Foley helped write, soliciting sex from a minor online is a federal crime," Reid said. "The alleged crimes here are far outside the scope of any congressional committee, and the attorney general should open a full-scale investigation immediately."

In his letter to Gonzales on Sunday, Hastert asked the Justice Department to investigate "who had specific knowledge of the content of any sexually explicit communications between Mr. Foley and any former or current House pages and what actions such individuals took, if any, to provide them to law enforcement."

The scope of the investigation, Hastert wrote, should ******* "any and all individuals who may have been aware of this matter — be they members of Congress, employees of the House of Representatives or anyone outside the Congress."

Hastert also sent a letter to Florida Gov. Jeb Bush on Sunday requesting that he "direct the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to conduct an investigation of Mr. Foley's conduct with current and former House pages."

Hastert maintained at first that he had learned only last week about the e-mails. But Rep. Thomas Reynolds (news, bio, voting record), head of the House Republican election effort, said Saturday he had told Hastert months ago about concerns Foley sent inappropriate messages to a teenage boy. Reynolds, R-N.Y., is under attack from Democrats who say he did too little to protect the boy.

Hastert acknowledged over the weekend that his aides had, in fact, referred the matter to the House clerk and to the congressman who was chairman of the board that oversees the page program. Hastert's office said, however, it had not known the e-mails were anything more than "over-friendly."

Majority Republicans engineered a House vote Friday that refers the Foley matter to the House ethics committee, but lets that panel decide whether there should even be an investigation.

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (news, bio, voting record) of California, the House Democratic leader, pressed the committee on Sunday to begin investigating and make a preliminary report within 10 days. She demanded to know who knew of the messages, whether Foley had other contacts with pages and when the Republican leadership was notified of Foley's conduct.

"Republican leaders have admitted to knowing about Mr. Foley's outrageous behavior for six months to a year, and they chose to cover it up rather than to protect these children," she wrote.

Congressional pages, a staple of Washington politics since the 1820s, are high school students who serve as temporary gofers in the House and Senate. The program nearly ended in the early 1980s due to alleged sexual misconduct and drug use.

Republican leaders say it is their duty to ensure House pages' safety, and are now creating a toll-free hot line for pages and their families to call to confidentially report any incidents. They also will consider adopting new rules on communications between lawmakers and pages.

House Democrats said that wasn't enough.

"This should be investigated objectively. I think the Democratic leadership should have been told 10 months ago," said Rep. Jane Harman (news, bio, voting record) of California, top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee. "I gather that basically nothing was done except that Foley was warned."

Rep. John Murtha (news, bio, voting record), D-Pa., said the House ethics committee should conclude its work on the Foley case before the November elections, so that voters can "hold people accountable." Doing so, he said, might help restore public confidence, since already "the reputation of Congress under the Republican leadership is lower than used car salesmen."

Foley, who is 52 and single, was co-chairman of the Congressional Missing and Exploited Children's Caucus. In a statement Friday, he said, "I am deeply sorry and I apologize for letting down my family and the people of Florida I have had the privilege to represent."

Harman was on "Fox News Sunday," Murtha appeared on ABC's "This Week" and Bartlett spoke on ABC's "This Week, CNN's "Late Edition" and CBS' "Face the Nation."

Tony Snow says big deal, they're "simply naughty emails"

Link to CNN video from this morning: http://thinkprogress.org/2006/10/02/naughty-emails

O'BRIEN: I would assume everybody would want to know, including the president. I mean, we're not talking about any old person. We're talking about the leadership of the Republicans in Congress.

SNOW: Yes, look, I hate to tell you, but it's not always pretty up there on Capitol Hill. And there have been other scandals, as you know, that have been more than simply naughty e-mails.

Gingrich Says House Leadership Would Have Been Accused Of ‘Gay Bashing’ If They Investigated Foley ‘Overly Aggressively’ (Fox News Sunday)

WALLACE: Speaker Gingrich, did House Republican leaders do all they should have?

GINGRICH: Well, I think if you look at what they actually knew, which was that the family did not want anyone involved, and the actual notes were relatively innocuous, there was nothing sexual in those notes. They had him counseled. They had the head of the page program, Congressman Shimkus, talk to him very directly. And I think they thought it was over. The newest incident only surfaced when ABC News interviewed Foley and he resigned within two hours, or I think the House leaders would have moved to expel him.

WALLACE: But, during all those months, they left Foley in the House Republican leadership. They left him as the head of the congressional caucus dealing with exploited children. No second thoughts about that?

GINGRICH: Well, you could have second thoughts about it, but I think had they overly aggressively reacted to the initial round, they would have also been accused of gay bashing. I mean, the original notes had no sexual innuendo and the parents did not want any action taken.

WALLACE: Well, how would it have been gay bashing?

GINGRICH: Because it was a male-male relationship. And it had no — there was no proof, there was nothing that I know of in that initial round that would have led you to say in a normal circumstance that this is a predatory person.

All right BlueStar, we get the idea already! Republicans are nothing but a bunch of disgusting, horny old men disguised as pious guardians of morality.

Vote Democrat! They've never molested kids! They just kill 'em before they're born...that solves everyone's problems.

Except, of course, for the pro-life Democrats. And then there are those pro-choice Repubs that like to kill babies and then molest them.

Ex-Rep. Foley checks into alcohol rehab
By LARA JAKES JORDAN, Associated Press Writer 1 hour, 9 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Former Rep. Mark Foley, under FBI investigation for e-mail exchanges with teenage congressional pages, has checked himself into rehabilitation facility for alcoholism treatment and accepts responsibility for his actions, his attorney said Monday.

The attorney, David Roth, would not identify the facility, but told the Associated Press in West Palm Beach, Fla., that Foley had checked in over the weekend.

"I strongly believe that I am an alcoholic and have accepted the need for immediate treatment for alcoholism and other behavioral problems," Foley said in a statement, Roth told the AP.

The Bush administration sought to distance itself from the scandal and the increasing questions about when members of the House Republican leadership knew of the e-mail exchanges and what did they know of Foley's actions. Coming five weeks before the election, the scandal involving the Republican congressman could cost the GOP control of the House.

"The House has to clean up the mess, to the extent there is a mess," White House spokesman Tony Snow told reporters at a briefing.

Foley abruptly quit Congress on Friday after reports surfaced that he'd sent sexually charged electronic messages to boys working as pages. In the statement, Foley said the "events that led to my resignation have crystalized recognition of my long-standing and significant alcoholism and emotional difficulties."

"I deeply regret and accept full responsibility for the harm I have caused," Foley said. He also expressed "gratitude for the prayers and words of encouragement that have been conveyed to me."

The FBI, meanwhile, "is conducting an assessment to see if there's been a violation of federal law," according to FBI spokesman Richard Kolko.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement said Monday it was also investigating whether the e-mail communications violated state law. Spokesman Tom Berlinger called the state probe "a precursor to a possible criminal investigation."

The developments sent House Republicans into damage control mode amid charges by Democrats that some House leaders may have known for months about Foley's inappropriate overtures toward the young pages.

Democrats have questioned whether the GOP leadership, including House Speaker
Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., tried to protect a House seat in an election year at the expense of the well-being of teenage pages.

Hastert issued his strongest statement yet on Monday, saying he was "outraged and disgusted with Congressman Mark Foley's actions."

The speaker was in Washington meeting with his staff, the House clerk and Rep. John Shimkus, R-Ill., the congressman who oversees the page program, to review the procedures on protecting the teenage pages while they are working at the Capitol and after they finish their assignments, said Ron Bonjean, Hastert's spokesman.

Hastert in a letter sent Sunday to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, asked the Justice Department to "conduct an investigation of Mr. Foley's conduct with current and former House pages," including "any sexually explicit communications between Mr. Foley and any former or current House pages and what actions such individuals took, if any, to provide them to law enforcement."

Democrats demanded that investigators determine whether Republican leaders tried to cover up Foley's actions for political reasons.

"The attorney general should open a full-scale investigation immediately," Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid of Nevada said in a statement, including whether GOP leaders "knew there was a problem and ignored it to preserve a congressional seat this election year."

Foley's West Palm Beach district is largely Republican, but now may be won by a Democrat. Republicans are struggling to maintain their House majority in the upcoming election. Florida Republican leaders were meeting Monday to try to choose a candidate to replace Foley in the November election.

FBI cyber sleuths are looking into the text of some of the Foley messages, checking to see how many e-mails and instant electronic messages were sent and how many computers were used, according to a law enforcement official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the ongoing investigation.

The FBI also was trying to determine if any of the teenagers who received messages are willing to cooperate with the investigation, the official said.

Ironically, Foley, who is 52 and single, could be found to have violated a law that he helped to write as co-chairman of the Congressional Missing and Exploited Children's Caucus.

Rep. Thomas Reynolds of New York, head of the House Republican election effort, said he told Hastert months ago about the allegations involving a 16-year-old boy from Louisiana.

Hastert acknowledged that his staff had been made aware of concerns about what they termed "over-friendly" e-mails Foley had sent to the teenager — including one requesting his picture — in the fall of 2005, and that they referred the matter to the House clerk.

But Hastert said those e-mails were not viewed as "sexual in nature" and that he was not aware of "a different set of communications which were sexually explicit ... which Mr. Foley reportedly sent another former page or pages."

Congressional pages, a staple of Washington politics since the 1820s, are high school students who serve as gofers in the House and Senate.
