in "go", just before the first chorus, there is this super delicious heavily chorused guitar that almost sounds like a steel drum, playing a little line leading up to the chorus. such a beautiful touch. like if u cry everytime

I'm not sure they are actual crickets are they? Sounds more like some kinda oscillating guitar effect. It's a lil too consistent to be crickets

Why go through the trouble of finding a guitar effect that sounds like crickets when you could just sample real crickets?

Probably it is a sound that was discovered playing around in the studio. Put your headphones on and turn it up a bit. It doesn't really sound like crickets at close examination. It's like a constant tone with some sort of pitch shift thing happening.

I've been really into Adore again lately, listening to it on headphones and kind of just immersing myself, appreciating all the different things going on, really studying it like I used to when the Pumpkins were virtually the only band in the universe to me. one night soon ima smoke hella trees and write here about all the amazing little things I've been noticing on Adore

redbreegull - that would be cool to read. It's a meticulously crafted piece of work and certainly still an underappreciated album, esp by the general public. songs like nightmare, daphne descends, and pug have a sonic depth that puts most more modern music to shame.

I ran across an interview with Jimmy that I thought was pertinent to this thread. It validates the pursuits of the participants of this thread. We aren't imagining things; it's really there.
Start at 2:45: https://youtu.be/jHON_mJpX-s?t=2m45s A personal favorite detail of mine is in the lovely Blondie cover Dreaming on the BwBW single. The synthesizer that enters in the intro at 0:24 as a lead instrument transitions to the bass synth at 0:35; it's the same synth! Cool. That instrument does some other impressive acrobatics over a wide pitch range near the end. |

Are there other bands that regularly employ this level of detail in their arrangements? I don't know if it is my personal bias or not, but I have never been able to find another artist with such an adept hand at the "little things" in songs. I can't imagine listening to songs from any other band and still picking up little subtleties I had previously missed after over 10 years of listening.
Old SP songs are kind of like huge, sprawling Renaissance paintings in that "collage" style with a thousand different things happening. Each one creates its own world with unique places and inhabitants and happenings. Depending on the track, you have 4-8 minutes to take in as much detail as you can from the painting, but that's never enough. Each painting is so big you can go back and spend that 4-8 minutes there over and over and over, and you never quite get the same experience. You never see all the same things, because there is just too much to take in |

I like the way the synth sounds in roustabout. it's so unexpected and unique.
i don't think any other artists EVER have done something like that. it's almost better then all the grand Renaissance paintings ever. Considering it's the first track billy has written inspired by Baby AJ, I look forward to what's in store for the future! |
