i've never thought of Fragile as more rock-oriented than Downward Spiral, really

more like if Downward Spiral was a briefcase, but you realized a few years later that case could invert & had 4+ more layers to it, & wasn't actually a briefcase at all

that analogy probably wasn't as cool as i thought it was when I started typing it, but basically: 'sa GOOD album

Did anyone notice the set last night in LA?

Not a single fucking song was from after 1994. Looked like a Self Destruct setlist.

I've become impossible holding on to when
When everything seemed to matter more
The two of us
All used and beaten up
Watching fate as it flow down the path we
Have chose
You and me
We're in this together now
None of them can stop us now
We will make it through somehow
You and me
If the world should break in two
Until the very end of me
Until the very end of you

I just need Trent to remaster Still and Things Falling Apart so I can expand The Fragile remaster even further

He should just combine them and add more unreleased material and remixes and call it Things Still Falling Apart. Eh? Eh? Am I right?

It bores me. I do like My Violent Heart and In This Twilight. But I've tried several times to get into the album and couldn't make it through. Tracks begin bleeding into each other. This was the beginning of when NIN kinda lost me. I don't hate it, but I don't love it either. I just couldn't connect with it. Problem was I felt a lot of it started to sound a bit samey, especially Year Zero, Hesitation Marks, and How To Destroy Angels' Welcome Oblivion. Ghosts was interesting, sounds like a great NIN album is hidden somewhere in there with some work. The Slip was okay, I like Letting You and Head Down. It felt a bit to stripped down.

With Teeth was the last album I truly enjoyed from start to finish. Man, when I put that album on I couldn't stop smiling. That Trent I enjoyed finally returned with Not The Actual Events. I absolutely love that EP and it's what elevates The Trilogy above post-With Teeth era NIN albums. Add Violence was pretty good, but started touching upon that Year Zero style that I just don't connect with. But Add Violence does it a bit better being a small dose of it. Bad Witch is pretty good, holds second place of The Trilogy for me.

I don't know, that Year Zero type of sound that took over just didn't do it for me. Trent always had a way of balancing live instruments and electronics and I feel the albums from Year Zero on got too electronic... which is weird because I'm more of an electronic music lover than rock enthusiast. But I missed all of those elements Trent would mix in from live instruments, especially drums, and other performers in the studio. The songs sound a lot better live with the band performing parts. I didn't really like Hesitation Marks, but the tracks sounded great live with the Tension band line up.

Man...

I really don’t like With Teeth (sans the ending run). I’m surprised it’s grown in regard over the years. It feels so hamfisted angsty and the lyrics are just ugh.

if you're put off by hamfisted angst & questionable lyrics how do you even love Nine Inch Nails so much in the first place?

I'm def in the pro-WT camp

I think in a weird way despite being arguably their most commercially successful record, The Fragile is actually the hardest NIN album to "get". It's not my favourite by a ways, but it's full of really great songs and some of the best little deviations in their catalogue. The funny thing about it is that I don't think i've ever listened to it all in one go, or even really regularly played either disc end-to-end. It was always two or three songs at a time that i really loved and then i'd notice others. It's a really rich record that can be difficult to take in cause of how varied it is in tone and shape an accessibility.

He was 40 and the lyrics there are way worse than he ever did prior

How do you go from The Day the World Went Away to Getting smaller

The angst earlier feels earnest and from the heart

WT seems like he’s trying to emulate the old vibe and I just don’t buy it. Weak songs and weak lyrics and I think that’s why he’s ignoring the album on the last tour

The Line Begins to Blur is top tier nin. And he doesn’t really ignore it. He played only iirc.

When your catalogue is as rich as his, not playing something from a particular album doesn’t mean it’s bad. He basically ignores the slip and my god that is not a bad record.

I said the ending of WT is awesome!

He’s played The slip plenty this tour. He hasn’t really dug into the deep cuts of WT

This is how I felt when it came out. WT seemed almost like a parody of NIN, but I guess it appealed to new fans who'd apparently been living under a rock.

Year Zero was like a relief...Trent had finally found new a way to expand beyond his own personal suffering (or at least he wrote it into a fictional universe to provide a new angle).

the fragile (fav: somewhat damaged / we're in this together)
broken (fav: most of it)
with teeth (fav: right where it belongs)
downward spiral (fav: heresy)
the slip (fav: 1,000,000)
pretty hate machine (fav: something i can never have)
year zero (fav: zero sum)
ghosts

haven't listened yet: hesitation marks, bad witch, add violence, not the actual events.

The Downward Spiral
The Fragile
Not The Actual Events / Add Violence / Bad Witch
Broken
Still
Pretty Hate Machine
Year Zero
The Slip
With Teeth
Hesitation Marks

I really do think The NTAE/AV/BW trilogy of EPs is the best thing he's done in fucking ages. Feels really raw and honest.

Downward Spiral
Fragile
Year Zero
Hesitation Marks (I must be alone, don’t know why)
Broken
Pretty Hate Machine
With Teeth
The Slip

Haven’t given the new stuff a fair shot yet

Underrated songs for me are Home and In This Twilight, and pretty much any of the more atmospheric tracks on HM

i remember Hesitation Marks being hyped only a little less than Bad Witch when it first came out

now it seems to just sort of be shuffled under the bed with The Slip & With Teeth or whathaveyou
