I have a big British flag that is currently folded up but for years hung in my room. I am not British, have never been to Britain, and my understanding is that if you go around waving the Union Jack in the UK people assume you are a crazy conservative

why wouldnt they? same as people waving a US flag in the US, or people waving a canadian flag in Canada. Patriotism of that sort pretty much always means right wing dumbass. You can make exceptions for national celebrations but still...i don't go to those, not even the Quebec one, and if i did, I wouldn't be waving flags anyway. You can in general like your country and culture without having to wave flags.

oh yeah I'm not surprised by it. The reverse can be seen as an American traveling abroad and seeing American flags all over the place and on people's clothes like it is a popular brand name or something whereas I associate wearing an American flag on your shirt as identifying as a George Bush dumbass
