Default R2-D2 rotting in Jawa Sand Crawler in Hell

Quote:
British actor Kenny Baker, who starred as R2-D2 in six Star Wars films, has died aged 81 after a long illness, his niece has confirmed.
Baker became a household name in 1977 when he took on the role of the robot R2-D2 in the first Star Wars film.

I heard they forgot about him in the R2 suit and he's been in a storage locker for years.

He lived a long time for a little person. They are much more susceptible to health problems.

i thought all the R2 scenes in the prequels used either remote control R2s or CGI.

edit

according to a number of articles Baker was credited in the Prequels but was probably only actually used for one scene in Attack of the Clones

i think that in Jedi he was only used for a couple of scenes. any scene in the old films where R2 was "walking" back and forth on his side legs used Baker. They aslo used him in the first move to turn R2's head from the inside.

it's crazy how low tech a lot of the fx were in the first film. They didn't have a fully functioning remote controlled R2 so they got a dwarf to do it. supposedly C3PO's costume was so shitty that they could barely film any scenes without parts of him falling off.

He is credited in all the movies, I have no idea how involved he really was. I heard some people questioning if they really paid him to sit inside a remote control robot for 10 seconds in TFA, but he's definitely credited.

and yeah it is crazy how cheap some of the effects were, and even crazier that they still look better than the CGI from the phantom menace
