Tie: The new Wilco and the new Flaming Lips.

The Notwist, Trail of Dead and Super Furry Animals (American domestic release; it counts!) albums are all great as well. I haven't heard the new Boards of Canada yet, but it's supposed to be pretty good, too.

This year hasn't brought any incredibly spectacular albums yet, but 2002's albums haven't had the time to entirely grow on me. However, I already have a few favorites:

-Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, Wilco (Okay, It's 2002's OK Computer, Sophtware Slump or Aegaetis Byrjun. Not that they are similar in style, but YHF is an above average album that is too hyped for it's own good. It's remarkable for an album out of the tired and trite alt-country scene, but it's a good listen nonetheless.)

-Cee-Lo Green and Perfect Imperfections; Cee-Lo (This may as well be the hip hop album of the year if not THE album of the year. A diverse and smart collection of songs. Everyone should listen to this one.)

-Geogaddi, Boards of Canada (Same BOC formula, but there is something deliciously evil about this album.)

-Point, Cornelius (Very smooth stuff http://www.netphoria.org/wwwboard/cool.gif )

-Leaving Home, David Berkman (I think this might be my top album so far. It's the most inventive jazz collection put out in recent years. It's cluttered with small innovations here and there that makes it sweet jazz with a classical sensibility.)

-Neon Golden, The Notwist

-I'm Happy, and I'm Singing, and 1, 2, 3, 4, Jim O'Rourke (For folks who need to be further convinced that electronic artists can make some of the most emotionally encompassing music probably need to listen to this CD. I'm including this one because it was released very late in 2001 that I don't really consider it a 2001 album.)

Small Circle of Friends, The Maxwell Implosion (It's the only quality dance CD I've heard this year. It's boom-tisk, genre hopping material)

I., Buffalo Daughter - (It's records like these that will get Japanese artists continue to great the "novelty" treatment. Oh well. It's just a small example of the increasingly refreshing and innovative music coming out of Japan.)

Tremenda Rumba!, Maraca - (Could've been an impressive recording if Maraca didn't try to commercialize the hodgepodge of Cuban music he puts together, but still pretty skillful and downright fiery.)

My faves right now would be Rye Coalition and Damien Jurado. Don't really count Wilco since I've been listening to it for so long already, but it's nice to finally have the real deal out.

I'm growing more and more addicted to The Walkmen, bandwagon or no. Its simply a fantastic record. "Rue the Day" floors me everytime I hear it.
The new Elvis Costello CD sounds amazing from what I've heard, I really can't wait to pick it up.
And although it was released last year in Europe, The Eels' Souljacker wasn't released till last month in the States, so I consider it a 2002 release. It kicks ass, flat out plain and simple.

Down - A Bustle in your Hedgerow

however, there's still the new Fantomas (hopefully), Peeping Tom's debut (hopefully), Superjoint Ritual's debut, the new Nevermore CD... the list could go on and on. I'm pretty sure there are dozens of bands that I like releasing CDs this year, and I'm blissfully unaware of them. I'm pretty bad about keeping up with the news around music releases.

It's kind of hard to describe. The best would be a bit rocky but poppy brit music but with a sort of 70s rock twist to it. Download Welcome off of 'Walking with Thee' if you are interested, it's a good example of the CD. I know my description sucks, but it's a really good CD.

Now tell me what's wrong with this album, apart from the fact that it was not produced by Steve Albini and that it doesn't sound as raw as you'd like it to sound. I think it's not as good as Taste for Bitters and Black Black but it's still a great album.
