Exclamation If you identify yourself with a religious organization

Please let me know in this thread so I can appease redbreegull by balancing out the mormon-bashing of Monte through calling you out on the fucked up stances and actions of your faith

I used to identify as Baptist up until like four years ago. Granted, that was mostly because I had been one my whole life...

Baptists are the worst

hard-core right on all social issues at the ballot box...rapidly anti gay and anti feminist

believe that the majority of the world is going to hell to suffer for all eternity unless christian missionaries reach them in time (they terrify young children with this) and in turn focus their outreach on conversion rather than aid

I grew up in a baptist infested place

good choice dropping that shit D

Looking back, I feel akin to having dropped out of a cult and feeling a little resentful for having such a sheltered/guilt-ridden upbringing. (I do have a shit ton of good memories, though most of them involve my family and friends, not necessarily the church.)

Never putting my kid through that shit.

Church's mission and practices seem sound...just a shame that it still roots itself so heavily in "scripture" and "creeds" (and all the baggage that comes with that) and has to cherry-pick the good parts, rather than becoming a purely secular organization. Obviously that's the price of building a congregation who realize the failings of Christianity but are too insecure to move away from the label.

but a step in the right direction at least.

i'm curious how this would compare to unitarian churches in the US

Well you often have to physically register as a Democrat to vote for a Democrat (or against a Republican) whether you fully agree with the party's current platform or not. Not really a question of how complicated it is...people identify themselves as different religions for many different reasons...same with political affiliations. I'm simply asking him what his personal reasons are...to answer if he chooses. not sure what you're asking?

born into it, turned away from religion, came to my own views on things and felt I could be religious/catholic and disagree with what I see as the bullshit. just like being a democrat.

theres more to it, but thats enough

you seem to be kind of against institutions in general. and the catholic church is one of the worst in the history of the world, imo.

also, even after being surrounded by catholics my entire life, i cannot wrap my head around how someone could actually truly believe its central tenants.

like i dunno

I believe in one God,
the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the Only Begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages.
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary,
and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,
he suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead
and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.
I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins
and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

let's say that hypothetically, i know everything. and i have a gun. i ask you if you think that stuff is true. if you're wrong, you get shot in the face. if i ask you about most of those things, are you really going to say you think they're true?

I don't Identify myself as belonging to any religious institution per se, given that I'm an atheist and all that, but I figure this thread is as good a place as any to mention my active interest in the philosophy of Islam and the Q'ran

Future Boy still grappling with the concept of opportunity cost in a miserable attempt to imitate his better, Luke de Spa.
