I am already cringing in anticipation of how embarrassing this album is going to be for me as a Smashing Pumpkins fan

A French review - translated by Google

http://www.radiometal.com/article/th...-no-sun,318276

For some, it will be one of the most memorable events of the musical year. The new installment of Smashing Pumpkins, Shiny And Oh So Bright, Vol. 1 / LP: No Past. No Future. No Sun. the wish of many fans, namely the meeting of James Iha, Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlin for the first time since 2000 and the album Machina. Missing only the presence of bassist D 'arcy Wretsky to get the full line-up classic. One could obviously sense it thanks to the meeting tour initiated this year. The Smashing Pumpkins did not really seek to operate in secret, Shiny And Oh So Bright, Vol. 1 / LP: No Past. No Future. No Sun. was perhaps unhoped for some but its release does not take anyone by surprise. He does not really surprise either,

It was the legendary Rick Rubin who was responsible for forging the sound of The Smashing Pumpkins for this new album. The latter has achieved the feat of creating a particular character, The Smashing Pumpkins has a sound that seems dated at first, evocative of the 90s and yet manages to not be obsolete. This is particularly noticeable on the overdrive of the guitar sound of "Silvery Sometimes (Ghosts)", a soft and melancholic title, a real showcase of the writing talent of The Smashing Pumpkins, which brings us back to the early hours of Europe. 2 and MTV. Apart from Billy Corgan's unique sound identity and cult sound, it's mostly Shiny And Oh So Bright Vol's songwriting. 1 who interpellates. The Smashing Pumpkins evolves in a velvet register, "Knights Of Malta" borrows more from English pop than teenage-rock, grunge or rock. Jimmy Chamberlin's piano notes, violin arrangements, feminine vocals and subtle touch are a starter that can be confusing if you expect electrifying riffing. The mid-tempo of "Travels" endorses this impression: The Smashing Pumpkins did not meet to revive a teenage spirit or to return to progressive experiments. It's a nostalgic pop rock that is the first talk of Shiny And Oh So Bright Vol. 1. The pseudo-ballad rock "With Sympathy" is in this respect evocative, until you want to dust off your walkman without any rational reason. Jimmy Chamberlin's violin arrangements, feminine vocals, and subtle touch is an entry that can be confusing if you expect an electrifying riffing. The mid-tempo of "Travels" endorses this impression: The Smashing Pumpkins did not meet to revive a teenage spirit or to return to progressive experiments. It's a nostalgic pop rock that is the first talk of Shiny And Oh So Bright Vol. 1.

Shiny And Oh So Bright Vol. 1 still contains some rock impulses and this immediate riffing which The Smashing Pumpkins has the secret. "Solara" has this little something of Black Sabbath before turning into explosive grunge title on the chorus, the cleanliness and more. We see the ease of James Iha for riffs rousing developed without complex and without artifice. If "Solara" serves as a classic rock title within the album, "Marchin 'On" takes another facet of the aggressiveness of The Smashing Pumpkins. The catchy rhythm of the title brings the formation of an edgy rock a bit stoner. We must praise the quality of an air refrain that comes to radically cut with the dynamics of the song and which again demonstrates the songwriting talent of the band. We find this audacity in the composition on "Seek And You Shall Destroy" and the mutiplicity of its parts, between rhythmic jerks with punk accents, classic rock climbs and almost orchestral chorus. The Smashing Pumpkins manages to demonstrate his experience without looking old.

Shiny And Oh So Bright Vol. 1 occurs eighteen years after Machina, with almost the entire mythical line-up of The Smashing Pumpkins. It is clear that the musical creation of these last remains instinctive and will provoke in the listener a feeling of nostalgia without drifting towards the déjà-vu. It is regrettable that this new opus does not reveal more aggressiveness and energy, which it compensates with simple melodies, light and heady. There is an apparent simplicity in the music of The Smashing Pumpkins that camouflages a myriad of small subtleties that keeps us going. In a way, Shiny And Oh So Bright Vol. 1 to the warmth of the best memories.

Hmmm, most of the reviews have been relatively good so far.

Maybe this new record really will be good.

you mean the six songs we haven't heard yet won't suck as much as the two we have?

Oh yeah... Fuck dude, I totally forgot there was only 8 songs.

The last Smashing Pumpkins album was only 9 songs... It feels sorta weird coming from Smashing Pumpkins, being that they're known for these sprawling albums.

I'm just looking over the track listing now... One song clocks in at 2:45 and another at 2:39 and 1 other track at 3:30! That's a little disconcerting. Is Corgan busting out some punk songs for the new release? lol

So really, there's really not a lot of music left to hear

Wow, this is obviously Day for Night, released three years late. As the French review suggests, people are going to love it just because James Iha put ebow over some of the tracks. Iha makes SP likeable by simply not being Billy.

It certainly looks that way.

I'm a little surprised that they didn't spend more time together and really work on putting together a special comeback album... You know, like really make an important statement.

If this one flops, the same anticipation won't be there again for the next record.

just a bad translation. It basically says Jimmy Chamberlin’s influence.

. Les notes de piano, les arrangements de violons, les voix féminines et le toucher ténu de Jimmy Chamberlin constituent une entrée en matière qui peut dérouter si l’on attendait un riffing électrisant
yeah, bad translation.
it translates better to:

and it's not about his influence

edit to add oxford comma.

Quand même. Quand tu mets ta touche, tu influence le sujet. Pas grave.

Apparently they only booked in to do one track to support the tour, but Rubin liked all the demos so they did eight in the end, intending them to be two EPs, then the label talked the into making it an album.
