This is obviously a complicated situation. Maybe I'm oversimplifying. But.

Everyone's initial reaction seemed to be "oh how could she" and it made me sick. Everone assumes he is mentally ill. Maybe he's just an asshole abuser.

This is something I used to point out a lot, and I don't think it makes one an apologist for murder, it's just normally you'd have to be mentally or emotionally disturbed to take another life, if only in that moment.

Of course there are exceptions, such as self-defence when your life is in danger, but, yeah, usually a person has to be unbalanced to go out and murder someone. I don't know if I even believe in mental illness anymore, but if it's a useful model it must surely be a scale.

The courts' definition of "insanity" in most jurisdictions seems pretty arbitrary to me. I thought I had more to say but I've run out of thoughts.

I mean...its a sore point with me cause i watch ID/true crime shows a lot and always this fucking notion of evil. he was an evil man...there is NO evil. I mean they had (have, it came back) a show called Most Evil and the guy is a forensics psychiatrist and he has come up with this scale to rate psychopaths on, a scale of "evil"... i mean...REALLY? you're a professional forensics psychiatrist and you buy into the concept of evil? Fuck you.

and then there's that awful horrible former FBI agent Candace Delong.... who clearly gets off on murder and likes to say things "she was an evil evil woman"

It's scary to me that most people in the justice system, from cops to psychiatrist to judges, seem to buy into the concept of evil. Cops being probably the worst of course.

I'd feel less ashamed to watch these shows if they weren't always so....so targeted at average americans. There always has to be some sort of religious (or moralistic) slant somewhere. I don't even think they realise it sometimes but they do. the worst ones might be the ones treating women killing their husbands/lovers as if it's some kind of playful thing..like the ads for those always seem to want to portray these women as soap characters, vicious AND sexy... like maybe it was just sisters doing it for themselves you know? you go girl kill that bastard cheating husband! he kinda had it coming! I mean can you imagine tv ads featuring a man looking at this wife bathed in blood and then smiling slyly at the camera?

But i digress here, i guess.

Insanity in a legal sense, and really a medical sense, means you don't understand the implications of your actions. Most serial killers know what they are doing. They may be disturbed but they are not insane. There are exceptions but generally it is pretty hard to keep a low profile and kill serially if you are actually insane.

I don't believe in "evil" either fwiw, but I understand how people don't have any other words for people who like killing others and inflicting pain/humiliation on victims. It is malevolence to such a degree it is hard to label.
