I remember watching a clip of Glass' Theme from the second to last concert at the United Center. It was, for lack of a better word, senescent.

the speed and energy with which the song blasts off, re the united center show, was exhilarating. such a 'holy shit' moment

and they carry that momentum non-stop through glass theme > everlasting gaze > bullet

Except the "I've betrayed rock n roll" lines. That and the fact that Glass is shattering seems to suggest the song could open disc 2, when Glass is having difficulty balancing the rock n roll life of excess with his divine charge. His psyche is shattering and his downward spiral begins. In contrast, "If There Is a God" established that Glass doesn't really care about religion and doesn't know who or what God is, and that the rock n roll lifestyle is what matters to him. That is better character development, making him an unlikely prophet.

But it's worth noting that when played live in 2000, the band would start with "If There Is a God" and segue it into "Cash Car Star". Not saying that was intentionally done as a hint to how it should go, but I really liked that idea and felt it was a better beginning than "Glass Theme". If you use the acoustic demo, then it's reminiscent of "Soothe" -> "Frail and Bedazzled" which I've always loved.

I took the "I've betrayed Rock and Roll" line to reflect where Glass was at the beginning of the GATMOG cartoon as that seemed to be a plan to loosely adapt the fable - that he was washed up and not giving a shit, living a hollow Gene Simmons-esque lifestyle on his laurels, and he initially redeems himself in his view by getting the band back together and giving shit again.

Maybe he betrayed rock n' roll by turning TOWARDS God? It's the devil's music after all!
