i really love j mascis, billy corgan, and shamefully kirk hammet. also he's not necessarily a shredder, but i think peter buck plays in an interesting way, really subtle and jangly

i'm not sure what that means don't everyone play with they fingers

or are you talking about the strum? instead of strumming with a pick they're playing like a classical guitarist?

yea he strums with his thumb and/or fingernails and does lots of double string plucking almost like clawhammer style banjo playing (certainly not fancy like classical guitar)

Mark Knopfler also plays this way. Its pretty rare in rock.

if anyone is going to say metallica it should be james fucking hetfield, the best rhythm guitar player on the planet. nobody beats him. he is so chunky, precise, powerful. his skill is unmatched.
hammett can muster up a decent solo in the studio but live he's a jerkoff.

How did I forget about Bill Steer?! Seeing Carcass live I was absolutely floored by his playing. What a rad cunt.

so happy sum1 mentioned graham coxon.

early blur he is so fucking technical and precise. I love those riffs.

late blur he really shines. go listen to battery in your leg or death of a party. ah. yes.

rock and roll guitar is a weird thing for me because i've never really been into riff rock from the 60s and 70s i think the best sounding rock guitars are present on early r&b records from the 50s - they're rough and jangly and use new rhythms and they're often very nervous/frantic sounding and the tone (usually tube tone squeezed out of a very small amp) just sounds so great to my ears. perfect amounts of chime and clang with a touch of growl.

i watch somebody like tony iommi and while i really love the playing i just don't feel much connection to it for some reason.

same with my bloody valentine. i should love them but they just don't click with me. i love reading interviews with and about kevin shields but i play the music and i'm indifferent for the most part.
