Another one from NME...it is pretty positive. Why 3 stars then.?

Dude also said he doesn’t own any bootlegs and will only buy authorized stuff. There were tons of cool boots from the 90’s. Seems weird to collect and exclude some of that stuff.

I pretty much agree with the reviewer. Cyr (the song) was interesting, but once it became obvious that every fucking song was just Billy dicking around with electronic compositions in the vein of 2000's new wave it got old real fast. So glad that James came back for this fucking garbage
I would honestly take Teargarden over this stuff, which is clown show music that I absolutely loathe At least GLOW had a riff. Not even an interesting riff, just a riff. Which was itself a 1995 reject He just. Keeps. Getting. Worse. I fully expect the next release to be Billy sharting into a tuba with the sound of Jimmy and James crunching potato chips as a backing track |

All of the singles from Cyr just end up leaving me numb. There's nothing memorable, nothing that jumps at you whether it's good or bad. I have no issues with him going full synthpop, god knows we needed a change of pace after MTAE and Shiny Vol.1. But if you're going to do this, then go all in. Experiment, go nuts, try to do something a little different so it doesn't end up being a basic, by the numbers synthpop record. |

Well, yeah. It might be worse than that, when you put like that.
Also, since I was talking about Teargarden earlier: didn't know how to use a synth then, still doesn't know how to use one now (remember the Ichabod???) |

I dislike Teargarden a lot less than I used to, generally. Widow will always be the worst thing he's ever created to my ears, and I maintain nothing on Cyr so far is close to that bad, even if it's unmemorable.
But Tom Tom's a hell of a fucking great song |

The 3 star reviews are a combination of reviewers not understanding the OG Pumpkins and therefore not seeing the difference because it's all same to them, and Corgan still having influence over old print media.
Whilst NME and Kerrang gave Zwan 8/10 reviews (iirc) the journos and readership at the time wouldn't be caught dead listening to them. |

Tom Tom is the only 5-star song he’s written since SIYL. If it wasn’t sentenced to the Teargarden purgatory due to the stupid “release plan” it would’ve been more widely known.
It’s funny, that’s a new SP song I could play for anyone, not feel cringe, and they’d love it. Unlike anything of Cyr. I don’t understand how he nailed Tom Tom and fucked the rest of the album up so badly |

When Honestly / MSOTS came out this didn't transition into any sort of mainstream recognition or record sales. Even within the rock audience at the time. People didn't like the singles or videos. They would play on MTV and were met with apathy or mockery. Indie clubs wouldn't play them. I'm a fan of Zwan, I'm not revising anything. I remember it well. |

Teargarden gets better with age, by virtue of the fact that it's better than what we're getting now. Tom Tom, Owata, Lightning Strikes, even the Fellowship. I've always liked Astral Planes, and A Song For A Son came out the day my second child was born which was kind of cool, so I have a link to that. If these had been proper one off singles, or an EP, and not wrapped up in the whole "44 songs for free" thing, it would've been different. |
