4 real 4 real

you should see me swaggering about to jackboot, staring down little children and intimidating poodles. every once in a while i get a weird look from an adult human and i deal out a sharp "what the fuck you lookin' at?!"

booyah.

I’ve lost about 15 pounds in the last year from walking 1-3 miles as many days a week as my schedule/weather allows. So like 3-4 days a week. Any more and my legs don’t recover because I’m old as hell and I’ll be out of commission for like 5 days with leg pain.

One location of the gym I'm a member of seems to be where all the super-fit people go. You know, they look like Instagram models, wear the bare minimum amount of clothing, or articles of clothing that look like they were designed more to expose the body than for comfort or practicality. I only go to that one when I'm in the area, because going there makes me self-conscious and hate myself (which says more about my insecurity than about anybody there, but whatever).

The locations I usually go to, like all gyms, have absolute units and super-fit folks. But I also see a wider variety of people. Old people who just want to retain functional strength. Large and skinny people who are just starting out.

Since I've been eating like shit for the past month or so, I've gained back a lot of the weight I had lost and am back to being heavy. Though I don't look as round as I did when I was previously this weight, since I've been lifting more and some of the weight now is muscle instead of fat. Still, my body fat percentage is kinda high (I think I'm above 25% again), and I wanna get much leaner. I don't think I could sustain a super-lean physique and not hate my life (I like sweets and pizza too much), but I'm sure I could eat a moderate amount of stuff I like while being 17% or something, so that's a probably a reasonable goal. I don't think ever being, like, 10% or lower is in the cards for me.

I've never been self-conscious in a gym, no matter what shape I'm in. I guess I am so focused on struggling through my exercise that I truly don't give a shit. I imagine the vast majority of people feel the same.

Yesterday at the gym, this huge gym-bro asked me how many sets I had left on the bench. I told him I was just starting, but welcomed him to work in with me. He asked if I'd be up to lifting the weight he'd be doing, and I was like "haha, no, that's too much for me, but I'll gladly help change the plates between our sets." The guy mentioned he had been lifting for about a decade, and was very encouraging, telling me I'd make progress.

Later on I was doing my deadlifts, and the guy was actually surprised by how much I was deadlifting, saying that it was more than he deadlifts. I was surprised, 'cause this guy was a mountain. He tried to lift the barbell, and couldn't do a rep. He was asking me if I had ever thought about powerlifting, because apparently I'm getting into that territory. The benefits of having been on a programme that cursed me with a T-rex body, I guess (I'm now doing a programme with more upper-body volume).

However, despite having had done two sets of four, I failed my two sets after that, barely pounding out two for each. Kinda made me feel like a fraud. Thing is, it was my grip strength that gave out, rather than my legs or back. I'll have to work on that if I want to increase my deadlift.

I have no idea what kind of exercise would be best for you or anybody else, but you might eventually be interested in weights/resistance training. A lot of people kinda think in this binary of "cardio for weight loss, lifting for getting muscular," but lifting weights can also be great for weight loss. It also burns calories while retaining more lean mass, which also increases your BMR. Larger people also have the opportunity to build muscle and lose fat at the same time at the beginning.

Since you live where the weather is nice, I think you can get a lot more milage out of continuing to walk for a while before you have to think about changes to your routine, though. After a while, walking may have diminishing returns, but if it's not broke yet, no reason necessarily to fix it.

Congratulations on being 140 lbs down! You're really committed to this.

Thanks. I've never really had an exercise program before. I was athletic as a kid but still fat despite that. By about 14 I was in the high 100s and just stayed that way for a long time. My nutritionist told me some people are just built like that and if I was comfortable around 200 that's perfectly fine. That body composition is the most important thing, rather than overall weight. I never thought I'd hear a nutritionist say being overweight is OK, but she did. She might have just been encouraging me to be realistic but either way it was nice.

I do want to start really exercising. I really do. But I haven't made it over the hump. But having a desire is new for me. I know I'd feel better moving my body. I don't think I've ever really thought that before.

On another note, I got some frozen pizza, and this cauli pizza in particular has not right to be so good:

obv this can't be a common thing, but i ate it over two meals, and boy is it good.

I like cauliflower crust more than regular crust, which is usually way too doughy. I haven't tried that brand, I've been getting Caulipower, which is like $7 per little pizza.

i still think walking is the way to go. why the hell would you toil away on a treadmill in a room full of sweating ppl when you can stroll around and seen awesome things like clouds and rainbows and squirrels and hawks and fucking SPANISH MOSS DRAPED TREES while listening to the cure or something.

i have spoken.

it's not on the pizza, it's used in making the crust
