Default Letterman's last shows

A thread to appreciate his last few musical guests.

I know you guys are not fans of pop GET OVER IT. There are some interesting performances happening at the moment - in terms of people with long spanning careers playing old favourites, kinda interesting to see bonafide career musicians bring classics from the American Song Book to life...I wonder if they might release them as a DVD or something...these songs are all very hard to inject new life into and it's pretty cool seeing these people try as a favour to Dave.

Jason Isbell & Amanda Shires play Warren Zevon's "Mutineer"

Tracy Chapman plays Ben E King's Stand By Me

John Mayer plays Don MacLean's American Pie

This song would just be a giant pig beast of a song to play in this setting so I have to give some props to Sexual Napalm Mayer here, for giving it a go. Orchestration/arrangements were all wrong...might have been a bit of a Schaffer mishap, I dunno. He did start and finish well, at least. The middle was all bit tiring and same-y.

Tracy Chapman is so great. I can't get past my intense dislike of John Mayer enough to click on his video though.

Yeah I completely understand that. And I love TC too. I cried watching that.

It is pretty fake and contrived, but that's par for the course in that genre. It's similar to a Gershwin or Cole Porter song in that regard - more about the words fitting nicely together than them being deeply meaningful.

Not that it's as interesting as a Cole Porter or Gershwin song an you could probably cut out a few verses and not miss anything.

I have never voluntarily listened to this song, but you two paying it out makes me want to attempt to bring it to life. Most songs have a bit of life in 'em somewhere I reckon. I say this as a church pianist - I've had to try and bring truly, truly naff music to life...stuff with titles like:

Make me a Channel of your Peace
Beauty for brokenness, Hope for Despair
I the God of Earth and Sky, I have Heard my People Cry
Jesus the Lord Said I am The Bread

So American Pie doesn't grate on me too much. But yeah...I've never listened to it voluntarily. I just assumed there would be better renditions out there, than Sexual Napalm Mayer's, but I accept I could be wrong about that and it is an unpolishable turd.

Norah Jones this past week. That performance was incredible, thought Dave was going to bust out in tears.

Steve Martin on Banjo, with EmmyLou Harris, Rodney Crowell, Mark O'Connor and Amos Lee...singing a gospel classic "Will the Circle Be Unbroken".

Can't go wrong with this line up...man I love Steve Martin.

They re-aired this classic from the archives, too...nearly killed myself laughing. My 9 year old loved it, too.

Steve and Dave's Gay Vacation:

It's just hilarious as a cute "what if...?" thing. What if these two nerdy white middle aged straight guys went on a romantic holiday together because they were a couple...

OMG just found this video of Chaka Khan flubbing all her lines from the auto cue, while still obviously trying to read it.

I didn't realise Paul Schaffer wrote this song. Props Paul. It's a classic.

My parents never were into the late night TV thing either.

My bro and I did share.a room for like five years and we did watch a lot of Conan, back when he was an orange sheep and no one seemed to like him.
