He will release a solo album next year, Jimmy will do the same. James will get busy with something else. He will try to get both of them back, they won't have the time to spend in the band by Billy's demand, he will get pissed, promoters will only offer small venues/affordable tickets, billy will be "I don't really know what makes sense any more," "I think you have to come to a place where you say, if you continue you continue with a particular vision, not keep rolling with the tide. Because the tide as it is I don't think it's that great. I'm not saying that the audience isn't great, or that the band isn't great. Something about it all feels a little too nicey nice. I'm not in a rock and roll band to be nice nice. It's just not my thing."

It will only work of he accepts the band is not gonna more than 4 thousand people to come and see them, specially if the tickets costs them an arm and a leg.

This all sounds pretty plausible to me. I can’t help but think the lack of Iha in the Solara studio mix vs live mix is a harbinger of Billy’s refusal to collaborate with any other guitarists - only the solo road lies open.

I don't doubt this, but PJ has also worked for many years to bring the hardcore fans together, give them special benefits, sell tickets to them first, etc. I haven't seen them live in over ten years so I don't know from personal experience, but I would guess they have struck a pretty good balance between casual and deep cut fans in terms of ticket sales, otherwise they wouldn't be able to keep playing arenas year after year after year when they pull out a significant number of deep cuts every night

Smashing Pumpkins as long as there is Billy Corgan could literally tour their hits for 30 more years in large theatres that hold 2,000 to 3,000 people. They are a big enough name that there will always be that many dedicated fans.

In order to keep success in arenas, they need more good new music . That is a bigger key than keeping James and Jimmy (although that is important too). All those people that came because of the nostalgia need a reason to go back again. Those are the people that will fill arenas. They are listening. Need good music.

I think the absolute most important thing for filling an arena again is original band members. And not good new music. Old music, old men, old fans. And even this probably won’t do it. Diminishing returns!

I'd love it if we saw some tours that focused on smaller venues and more album-specific setlists. Shows focused on deep cuts with a smattering of hits and new songs would be great, and probably marketable enough with this line-up.

This show was an unabashed nostalgia fest for sure, but nothing really felt lazy about it, imo, which is generally my problem with nostalgia-centric shows. The visuals for Shiny are some of the best I've ever seen at a concert, and the super long set ensured that it felt grand and ambitious- and honestly, that's how the Pumpkins almost always felt during their peak years. They are pretentious as fuck, but to the point that the pretension can feel fantastic, inspiring, and huge. Billy's whole thing is this desire to assert himself as special ("I fear that I am ordinary, just like everyone"/ "I just want to beeeeeeeeeee, me! When i can...") ; the tour both pays tribute to this sense of "specialness", and the desire to be special, and casts it as hubris.

I think we all know that the clarity that this could imply is bullshit, and Billy will probably throw james and/or jimmy under the bus soon. Oh well. I'm really glad I decided to attend this tour.

Pearl Jam is the ONLY one who has been successful NOT doing oldies tours. They can basically pull out any song from their discography on any given night. If you went and saw Weezer, you don't think Weezer plays mostly their hits and fan favorites?

"Get real bro."

That's what nearly every old act does
Yup. I’ve seen Weezer twice in the last past three years. At one show the only non-radio single they played was Surf Wax. The rest was mailed in hits and the crowd ate it up.

Bands with well regarded legacy albums and newer material; it's not that hard to find the right balance in the set. Usually something like this works best:

1. Well known mid-period song
2. Early hit
3. Early album song
4. Newer song
5. Newer song
6. Big mid-period hit
7. Mid period album track
8. Mid period album track
9. Surprise cover
10. Acoustic early track
11. Acoustic newer track
12. Big rockin' hit
13. Latest most well known song

Encore 1:
14. Hit single
15. Deep cut
16. Well known deep cut
17. Big hit

Encore 2:
18. Second most well known song
19. Most well known song

The new music will suck and he will lash out against the media like he always does. Then 10 years down the road he will admit that the music sucked. Just like he did earlier this year with the SP 2.0 music.

I don't know, I think that this nostalgia act schema needs more hits in the main show. Probably doesn't need two encores. Putting one big hit in an encore makes sense, but not 3 or 4. People will be annoyed that the show "ends" twice without hearing We don't even care.

The problem isn't encores. The problem is playing a fucking Dumbo song for an encore.

That's a sweet set, tho the only way I wanna hear Smashing Pumpkins do Hotline Bling is either if James sings it or Drake himself joins them on stage

When I saw Billy on his weird solo "Smashing Pumpkins, but not really Smashing Pumpkins" tour he covered a Miley Cyrus song. I just about vomited in my seat.

Billy just did that because he knew it would get him a lot of click-bait headlines... Good free promotion for the tour.

He will blow it by overthinking it, just like he has been doing since the day his record sales stopped peaking. But we all know that already, so I'll get more creative.

I'll wager that he blows it by unexpectedly turning on Katie, absolutely tearing her apart one day on IG with no warning. Intense angry rant where he says she almost ruined the tour. Blames her on the poor reception to Solara. Claims her heart was never truly in the band. I know its a stretch but he habitually turn on his band mates every few years or so, and I'm calling Katie as the next target.

Actually it's pretty hard to limit the set to 20 or so songs, cos every time you make it you think "but they didn't play such-and-such". The 30 song set of the Shiny tour makes a lot of sense, as they have so many songs to play. I'd have dropped the covers however, and included more Gish material or Machina 2 material - Dross or Cash Car Star would've been cool.
