I remember a rare interview from D'arcy in 1998 where she mentioned the majority of her bass guitars, amps, and gear belonged to Billy.

Six years ago BILLY was selling instruments on eBay. Beside them was a bass, on which he mentioned, D'ARCY had played it:

The SMASHING PUMPKINS Tour Plan from 2015
by Steve Jennings (Photos and Text) • in Wide Focus • Created: October 15, 2015

http://plsn.com/articles/wide-focus/...ins-2015-tour/

The Smashing Pumpkins + Marilyn Manson co-headlining tour was out this summer with the Pumpkins set designed and directed by Lawrence Upton and Manson’s set designed and directed by Jon Eddy. PLSN spoke with Craig Gaff, lighting designer and director at UV Lighting, about the Pumpkins side. UV Lighting, based out of Chicago, is Gaff and Upton’s design and consulting company. The tour’s lighting provider was DPS Inc.

Craig Gaff

Lighting Designer, UV Lighting

“There are basics that both band LD’s are utilizing, such as [Martin] MAC Vipers, Sharpys and Atomics. While both bands use minimal front lighting, Lawrence chose the [Vari-Lite] VL4000 spot based on the features it has for his Pumpkins set. He chose the Ayrton MagicBlade for the type of effects that it’s capable of producing. With the VL4000 and the Ayrton MagicBlade, we knew that we could do things with them that would eliminate the need for video, lasers, and other EFX. Each LD had their own floor package as well, while relying heavily on the GLP impression X4 for uplighting effects on the set.”

DPS Inc. supplied the lighting gear for UV Lighting's design.Upton had an idea for a “cityscape” set, but didn’t want to have a truck full of set carts, according to Gaff.

“He had the idea to ‘invert’ it, like stalactites. Then it just made sense to do it with soft goods. That is where Jeff Flowers and Rose Brand came in. We had an idea and a visual ‘concept,’ so to speak, and without having to CAD everything out ourselves, Jeff and his team were able to turn our concept into reality — in a very short amount of time, I might add.

“Lawrence has always had innovative ideas and has thought well outside of the box. I mean, look at his lighting style with The Crystal Method, which is how every EDM show is lit today. It’s little things like that. He could have had a rig with 500 fixtures and a ton of video, pyro, and EFX, but he wanted to try something that really hadn’t been done in the rock ‘n’ roll world, it was a straight-up classic theatre gag. I have always admired Lawrence’s creativity.

“The Pumpkin’s Billy Corgan always has the final say, and a lot of input on what his show looks like. The side-lighting thing was something Lawrence started years ago, and Billy liked it. I can assume because it makes you feel less exposed out there. I mean, I come from a performing family, so I know full well the guts it takes to get up in front of a crowd and do what he does. So Lawrence turns it into a theatrical design in that respect.”

Rose Brand provided the soft goods for the Smashing Pumpkins/Marilyn Manson tour.Another look at the show, from the Marilyn Manson side.DPS is the tour vendor, with John Lee as the tours’ representative.

“Everyone has known John Lee for years and knows he will always go the extra mile for you. With the support he has from the owners and management at DPS, he really has the ability to do everything that is needed for a production of any kind, without cutting any corners. We worked with him for three bands this summer, and every package was prepped beyond our specifications. DPS went way above and beyond so that every production was easy to put together for each artist. When we had preprogramming that needed to be done for a floor package, Tom Huston and Brittany Maurette of DPS always gave us exactly what we requested and, of course, nothing would have happened without Milton Diego’s CAD talents.

“Our hat’s off to Jon Griffin, who was able to program what Lawrence wanted in a very short amount of time. Lawrence moves fast and is hard to keep up with a lot of the time. Jon just came in and got it done. And again, a huge thanks to DPS for the use of ‘The Grid’ at their shop. To be able to set up the entire rig — there is really no substitute for that.”

This candid look behind the curtain might be not be the greatest PR.

Calling James a visitor on instagram and now it looks like he only contributed guitar parts a la The Processional. Whilst Jimmy and Billy steer the creative process. Maybe that’s how it always worked, but a photo of them jamming and building an album together in the studio would’ve built more confidence.

The triumphant return of Iha has been kind of odd and muted.

Also... fuck off Jeff, no offence Jeff. But fuck off.

So far we were assuming James would only come back for the tour, and now we know he recorded the guitars as well. So maybe they've worked together before, maybe even while he was recording The Processional + the other song that didn't make the cut.

How can Jeff, a fan of the original band, not feel like he is tainting the sound now that James is back?

You guys give Billy a lot of flak for bringing Jeff back, but it’s Jeff who should have bowed out in sheer respect for James.

"Well, I've worked hard for the last 12 years, I was the only one around when everybody else was quitting, I went thru 5 or 6 different line-ups, good gigs, bad gigs. But hey, James is back, I'll leave now and come back when he's gone after the tour".

Right

Are you the resident Jeff apologist here? "Jeff gtr" are the seven most disappointing letters I've ever read.

Jeff has been in the band for the last 12 years.

Nobody’s favourite SP music was produced in the last 12 years.

Not saying that’s Jeff’s fault obv, he seems like a nice guy, but it’s not a classic Pumpkins reunion with Jeff.

The sticker placements in those bass photos (D'arcy and Billy) are very different. Maybe it isn't even the same bass.

it was, hasn't been in any way since 2000. so to go "he should have fired the one person who did every fucking tour and project with him for 12 years and then call it at least a 3/4 reunion of one tour of one band that has not existed for longer than it has" seems a bit excessive.

to fire jeff would be an utter dick move. for what? one summer tour? he will go on doing whatever afterwards, is he supposed to call jeff then in october and say "yo buddy I fired you, but can we keep going now that the "reunion tour" is over?"

You know, I'd actually accept Jeff being involved if Billy actually said something along the lines of;

"We're hoping to bring out the best from all eras of the Pumpkins, and make a great album together with 3 guitarists. Can't wait to share it with you".

But it's coming across more like;

"Oh you want a reunion? Well here's Jeff too, cocksuckers haha"

that's the thing though, it is not a reunion of sp1 anyway. sp zeitgeist had jeff. it is a tour guys, not a revival of the 90ies.

and I don't expect james to take the place he once had - anyone thinking we'll see him fulltime with JC and BC after this summer? I mean he has a band.
