I moved to Virginia last July. We're almost certainly bound to be back in Europe somewhere though. My job prospects are better over there.

No, I don't think the tax rate is 'oppressive' but some people (and, and we're talking the facebook guy that renounced his citizenship, Tina Turner and maybe a couple others) found themselves sufficiently 'oppressed' that they figured they'd be better off leaving for good.

Why did you say they were "probably" oppressed?

I couldn't find what I said with a CTRL-F, so what I probably meant was that this is all situational and relative. Some rich people are probably fine playing more taxes, some may be in a more precarious position. So a 35% tax rate (or whatever a rich person pays in the US) is probably oppressive for some and not for others.

Not sure what you mean by "precarious position". There are no wealthy people being taxed into bankruptcy.

The question I'm asking is do YOU think it's oppressive. You said "probably" a few posts up.

I mean, what kind of egotistical bullshit is it to leave the country that made you wealthy because you don't want to pay it forward.

That is not exactly true.

Anything short of this:

is probably going to be some sort of oppression. So yea, any time you have your land, or money or whatever taken from you (by a government or whomever) that is a form of oppression.

At least in The States that doesn't happen. Like ever.
I can't speak for every country of course.

I don't view taxation as oppression as long as the people who levy taxes are democratically elected.
It's people collectively deciding how resources should be distributed.
The oppression comes in the form of allowing the few to control the resources that rightfully belong to the many.

The government is the way in which we demand things from the elites and I think libertarians let the elites of way easy when they start thinking of things like taxes as oppression

I'm not going to go find an example of a wealthy person being taxed into bankruptcy. I'm sure it happens at least occasionally and I don't feel the need to do a google search to prove it to myself or anyone on this board.

By the way - and I have no where else to post this so I am posing it here - I got trolled the other day by a libertarian because I was quoted in an article saying that the current monetary system works 'reasonably fine.' Some guy looked me up and wrote a four page email about monetary collapses and paper money. The article wasn't even about the modern monetary system, but he had an hour or whatever to write me a long email about this offhand comment.

I just don't care enough anymore to debate this crap with people. It's pointless. Yes, I agree with him that there are problems with the monetary system. What I meant by the quotation was that we can all go out and buy bread anywhere with dollars at fairly stable prices... I don't know why that was so hard.

If you understand how taxes work the idea of a wealthy person being taxed into bankruptcy seems pretty much impossible.
It's not something you should just assume to be true

Your position is that wealthy people are forced to declare bankruptcy because of tax rates in the United States, and you shouldn't have to have any data or even a single anecdote to back that up?

I'm not asking for a position paper here man.
