when did your kids start lying to you? this is a general question, im not saying they're liars or anything - only that kids learn at some point that lying is an option. when was this?

Children start employing deception at around age four1.

BTW, this counts as a post authorizing you to ask me a question.

When I joined the oboard in 2000, I initially went by Alchemist_33 because of the Machina mystery. But later my friend told me she thought it was a Paulo Coelho reference, so I changed it (I don't like his work). I didn't know what else to pick, so Rairun became my default username from then on.

i know this but i want to see when she started seeing it personally, if their was a difference in each kid, etc. (younger siblings are supposed to learn earlier)

ok your questions is: what is one thing that should be taught to children in school (say, middle school or younger) that isn't already

that's funny because my name was something i picked for an online RPG called the realm, which was developed by some people who ended up working on EQ (which subsequently blew the realm out of the water and took many of our players). the realm is still around, somehow

I actually made that age up for the sake of the joke and I had no idea it was correct. I probably picked it up from you mentioning it, though.

Hmm, that's a good question. I'd say critical thinking in general. Like, basic epistemology (not the really hard philosophical problems, like "can we know the external world?" or "what is knowledge?" or Gettier problems or anything like that), but just what makes reasoning valid or cogent, what makes evidence credible and reliable, etc. Rudimentary logic (I wouldn't expect them to do proofs and shit, but just to assess arguments). Pretty much, just calibrating childrens' bullshit detectors so that they don't grow up thinking that lemon juice cures cancer and that the reason nobody knows this is Big Pharma.

My hunch is that there is a reason this isn't taught to school children, though: it'd make them harder to deal with. Teachers already know that trying to argue with a kid is a dead end because kids can be pretty good debaters, so the method is to shut them down before shit even starts. You don't want to give them even more tools to challenge the authority of the rules with, and sometimes even the teachers know those rules are bullshit, but they just need to follow them to make life easier because sometimes you have to go along to get along. Especially with "zero tolerance" rules, which are often only in place not in the interests of the students or staff, but because schools need to avoid lawsuits.

i think it's actually more like 3 years old but i don't remember. i know they start lying to make other people feel better around 4. it's when their theory of mind goes from desire theory to belief/desire theory

i think this is actually a really good idea. i don't see why you couldnt teach very basic logical ideas to kids in later elementary school (like how people need to back up what they say with facts in an argument and what is or isnt a good source) or even basic philosophical logic rules to middle schoolers

The single one. I don't feel as bad for picking on megafauna because it makes more sense (but of course I prefer no violence).

Let me know if you've seen any of these and I'll replace:

The Big Lebowski
Mulholland Drive
It's a Wonderful Life
Vertigo
Dazed and Confused

That's a good mix of stuff. I could do like 25 separate lists.

i'm not really much about 'playing guitar' much, though. like, it's not a 'show them my licks' thing or something. devin is probably my last guitar hero, and that's mostly because of his particular way of playing rhythm. i would just enjoy meeting any musician i admire and jam with them, share their air of craftsmanship.

I don't care how overplayed Comfortably Numb is, the guitar solos have the most superior tone ever

what should I listen to by devin townsend

you gotta listen to the live performance of Comfortably Numb from Pulse, '94 - i still think it might be the single best lead guitar tone/playing i'd ever listened to in my life. Gilmour solos for like 9 minutes and it's all incredible.

hard to say - he's got so many albums, spanning from extreme metal, to alternative shoegaze, to ambient, to new age flutey stuff, to haunted space country music. generally speaking, what is appealing for you right now?

you're just a little fuckface with long-winded posts who finds everything he does interesting and you have the nerve to say that shit to someone who hardly posts. you're also the fuckface who gets off on how long his rants are in the "tehbolly's confessional rambling movie review ghost thread", but you for some reason still say that shit to turdlion.
