Why are the SP superfans all clearly on the spectrum?
I’m just curious
I think about super fan groups etc of the leftover 90s bands like NIN, Radiohead, Pearl Jam, etc and they’re all relatively normal functioning adults Pumpkins fans all seem to be at least slightly autistic (Monte, Clay, etc) I mean Sad Machines is the most hilarious “fan group” I’ve ever seen Thoughts |

I’m slightly on the spectrum and I was attracted to this band and tried to do some thinking as to what attracted me to this band originally and I can’t remember

SP fandom is somewhat factional. There's the cynics who love the original incarnation of the band but are still hanging around to watch the shitshow. There's the blindly faithful who would probably flagellate themselves if they dare have an impure thought about Billy. There's people in between who are willing to give an honest effort to listen to the new music as it comes out, and allow themselves to even like it.
There are weirdos in all of these groups, but saying they're autistic is a misdiagnosis and a slight to people who are actually autistic. There was a prominent poster* here for instance is diagnosed with autism, but you wouldn't be able to tell they were autistic if your litmus test is how much of a deranged superfan weirdo they are. *who out of respect for their privacy I won't name, those who know them will know who I'm referring to Last edited by Shallowed : 07-22-2018 at 12:22 AM. |

As to why, it probably comes down to Billy being such a colossal asshole. If you love the music and think he's an asshole, then there's a conflict of emotions that can resolve itself in weird ways. These people have various limits of justifying Billy's behaviour at different times of their life and the bands history, and when they do it's kind of like getting out of an abusive relationship. Sad Machines and their ilk, well, they have no problem justifying and excusing Billy's behaviour, so of course they'll be crazy.

In fact if you think of other infamously assholish musicians, some of them have very similar factional fandoms. Morrissey, John Lennon and Kanye West come to mind.
No wonder you haven't found weirdo superfans of NIN and Pearl Jam, because no-one in those bands are infamous assholes. Also I think you're wrong about Radiohead, a lot of their fans are rabid superfans that think the band's music is the absolute peak of artistic expression, but they're not quite as insufferable as SP fans because at least Radiohead is actually good. |

A lot of Tool fans are nuts.
STP's fanbase is pretty fucked up, but that comes with the terribly tragic story of that band. Soundgarden's fanbase has become divided and pretty nuts since Chris died, but it wasn't always that way. |

SP and BC fans in particular are the absolute worst. Any instagram hashtag search will back that up. Or just hang around the line at any show. Oof...

Exposure to SP is very dangerous. It contains trace amounts of all sorts of heavy metals which have been linked to autism. I wrote a paper on this some years ago but my research was shut down by lobbyists from the music industry.

Yeah, I count SP, NIN, Tool, STP and Soundgarden among my all-time favorites. One thing I've never understood is why fans of one iconic band get all pissy if another band disses them. Like, I remember SP fans being all outraged a number of years back when Reznor said something to the effect of "I've never found anything Billy Corgan does to be that interesting" and I think he eventually issued an apology for it. Like, who gives a fuck if Trent Reznor doesn't like the Pumpkins? Aside from the disappointment that Billy and Trent will never work together, why does it matter? (And let's be honest, I think we've all pretty much given up hope of any other prominent artists working with Bill again, other than James and Jimmy.)
I'm sure there were legions of fans who were equally pissed at Reznor for the Starfuckers Inc. video, but nerd rage on the internet wasn't as big back then. |

Yeah no, Trent's work in the last two years beats everything of Corgan's for the last fifteen. NTAE, Add Violence and Bad Witch are great and the movie scores are top notch too. Say what you want about BC but NIN deserves every fan they have.

Yeah. I'm more of an SP fan than an NIN fan but Trent's output since 2000 kicks the shit out of Corgan's.
