So Disney pretty much owns the entire entertainment industry now
http://money.cnn.com/2017/12/14/medi...eal/index.html
TL;DR version: Disney bought Fox's moviemaking and TV show making industry. Avatar, The Simpsons, the rights to the X-Men and Deadpool are among the gajillion or so IPs that Disney will now own. So yeah...this is cray cray. |

Fox. Huh. Then they own Brooklyn Nine-Nine too.
Disney is doing really well, in that case. Marvel hasn't made a bad movie in a long time, and they always make a shit ton of money. The Last Jedi is pretty good, from what I hear. |

Well this also means Disney has rights over the original Star Wars prints, meaning they can re-release the older films without the effects touchups now.
Hopefully they do that. |

yeah. That one change they made at the end of Return of The Jedi was really unneeded.
I lost all faith (in Disney's ownership of SW) after watching The Force Awakens. Hopefully The Last Jedi restores it. Rogue One was pretty decent though. Donnie Yen FTW. |

What? Really?! The Force Awakens is one of my favorites of the series.
And I thought Rogue One was largely meh. lol |

Come to think of it, TFA is pretty decent. My expectations of it were way too high.
I basically felt it was a remake of Episode 4 or something. Also, Rogue One had some pretty good acting, lol. Plus, I felt it was an interesting movie. Isn't an integral part of the franchise, but it still entertained me. TFA probably set the bar lower for the franchise, imo around that time. Carrie Fisher tho :'( |

I liked TFA, it was well made and everything, but it was a rehash of ANH. I think I liked Rogue One better.
I have much higher expectations for The Last Jedi, which I am seeing tonight. Back on topic, I am genuinely concerned about what Disney will do with IPs like Deadpool. Disney has done a great job with Marvel so far, of course, but Deadpool is uniquely R-rated for a Marvel property. Will that continue with the Mouse as the boss? |

Oh shit. I hope not....? From what I've read, they started filming the movie a while back. Plus, it'll still be released under Fox's name. Disney has to be sensible enough about this. They can't NOT make it an R-rated movie. One of the reasons people love Deadpool so much is because of how edgy he is. |

I guess since Fox owns the film rights to some Marvel Comics properties (X-Men, Fantastic Four, I think Namor the Sub-Mariner?), Disney, which owns Marvel Studios, might find a way to fold them into the Marvel Cinematic Universe? With that deal with Sony that allows them to use Spider-Man, that's pretty much all the Marvel film properties under one roof, potentially putting them all in the same universe, just like they are in the comics. Weirdly, Universal owns the license to make solo Hulk films, so that's why you never see him in his own movie anymore, and they have to stick him as a supporting character in things like Thor and Avengers.
I dunno, Fox has been doing pretty well financially with the X-Men property, and it seems too late to fold them into the MCU without raising a shit-tonne of questions. Like, if mutants are part of this universe, where have they been for the past 20 films? You mean, there's been this whole civil rights movement for people born with weird powers and government programs to hunt them down this entire time, and that's just never come up before? Probably better to keep them their own thing. Fantastic Four though, Fox has consistently shit the bed with that property, and Marvel Studios could probably do much better with them. And, it wouldn't be that hard to just add them into the main universe. Don't have to do an origin, just say they've been doing shit for some time, but we're only just now catching up with their adventures. |

Also, I don't necessarily think Disney won't stick to an R-rated Deadpool if it proved to be wildly popular. I mean, what's that Punisher Netflix show rated?

Hmm… these are a lot of thoughts for a guy who's never even bothered to watch Deadpool, a single X-Men film, any of those Marvel Netflix shows, or 70% of those Avengers universe movies. I don't know why I'm more interested in the corporate jockeying of IPs than I am the actual movies.
But speaking of the business side, it is concerning that media is being concentrated in fewer and fewer corporations. Especially with that possible AT&T buyout of Time Warner. One of the few good things Trump wants to do is prevent that merger, but only because he hates CNN and wants his buddy Murdoch to be able to buy the company instead, so he can turn the news network into another Fox. And I hate CNN, but I hate Fox News more, and we really don't need another one. |

If I recall correctly (and don't quote me on this), Lucas still retains the rights to A New Hope, regardless of what studio is distributing it.

The clapping masses aren't meant to ask questions like how it was that Morgan Freeman could go from introducing a sonar phone app to Bruce Wayne in one moment to having it installed without the need for new hardware in the phones of Gotham's entire population in the next, remember. Deus ex machina is a natural go-to for the teams of nephews and sons-in-law that write these things. |

Hmm. Even though I don't think the Marvel Studios material is as good as people seem to think it is (which accounts for why I don't keep up with the films), it seems clear to me that the films are made with love by geeks who really care about these characters, rather than just being montages of scenes meant to tick off items on a checklist for appealing to all four major quadrants. I think guys like Kevin Feige legitimately want to do the characters justice and have a coherent universe, even if the films are fairly safe and run-of-the-mill action-adventure fare.
As for the sonar element of The Dark Knight, isn't all that's needed for sonar the ability to emit sound and record the resulting echoes? Phones can already do that. Maybe all that was needed was to remotely take control of those phones through some program running in the background that has microphone privileges. All Wayne would need is the technology to convert that information into meaningful interpretable data, and that technology wouldn't have to be in the phones themselves, but on his end, where all the sound data is collected.. If Wayne Enterprises in this universe has a similar market share of cellphone operating systems as, say, Android does in the real world, all Wayne would have to do is sneak the program into some update. Enough people would have it for his surveillance to work. But that's just me filling in gaps. The screenwriters probably didn't think about it, and it probably didn't matter to them. And I don't blame them, it seems like an acceptable suspension of incredulity to me, and not the kind of leap in logic that I would consider a detriment to a film. But to each their own. Maybe that sort of thing bothers other people. |
