I hate his vocal delivery on Marchin’ On. It sounds like self parody and essentially “look I can still rat in a cage”. Also Alienation isn’t that bad but his vocals sound like scratch vocals, hoarse and croaky, needed a better vocal take.

Hey hey, a fellow "Pretty Pretty Star" fan! Love that one. I remember back in the day on Blamo and here on Netpho that song used to get a lot of hate but I really like it. Same with TheCameraEye; that song has an awesome groove. Also love Mina Loy, Walking Shade, and Now and Then. I hate All Things Change and that cover of To Love Somebody though.

this is kind of how I feel about As Rome Burns, in retrospect

for Marchin' On, however, I think it really works

though it's much more Cash Car Star than Bullet

Yeah I love Pretty Pretty Star. I mentioned it a few weeks ago and a bunch of people came on and said it was terrible.

Strayz is also one of his most beautiful and honest songs.

Agreed, the soundscapes are actually pretty good. I listened to it last month for the first time in years and was surprised that I liked it. I subbed Tilt in for To Love Somebody though.

I'm not a felon either, fatherfucker. I'm a quadruple felon.

Ruminate on that for a bit.

“You’ve committed 300-plus crimes. You’ve been charged with multiple felonies,” he says, listing off his accomplishments. “There’s a point where the empirical data kind of adds up.”

Yeah, I never got the hate for PPS. I mean, I can understand not liking it but people were always calling it embarrassing and the worst thing he's written and all that.

Of course, that was back before Turd-shartin' by Kaleidyscope and Solara and about 50 other songs that lick the sweat off a dead man's balls so maybe those people have reassessed their judgment.

Music Critics See Their Role and Influence Waning in The Era of Digital Music

.
.
.
One of the biggest shifts in digital-era music journalism is the changing role of the music critic.

Chris Weingarten

“I feel like professional music criticism is almost a thing of the past,” said Rolling Stone contributing editor Chris Weingarten, who has been vocal about the topic in recent years and calls himself the “Last Rock Critic Standing” in his Twitter bio. He noted that there are “limitless” opportunities to write about music online for free or next-to-nothing, but professional critics are losing the relevancy they once had.

“A critic’s voice is now someone who’s trying to speak articulately in the midst of noise,” Weingarten said.

Album leaks and streaming services like Spotify have democratized the public’s access to music, Weingarten said, and this diminishes the immediacy and impact of reviews written by professionals.

By the time any of those reviews hit, you’ve heard it. You’ve made up your mind,” Weingarten said. “The whole idea of sitting down and reading eight grafs about it after all that? It’s almost like, ‘Yeah, I’ve moved on.’”

I like reading reviews of stuff, not because I want to know what to think about them, but because I want to see what other people drew from the work.

In fact, I usually read film reviews after, not before, seeing a film. You know that wish you have to discuss a work after consuming it? That urge to talk about it with friends? I read reviews for that reason. That's why I find them interesting, even if I disagree with them. Just the desire to share interpretations and experiences.

A well-written review isn't necessarily one that has the same opinion as I do.

I think critics like Anthony Fantano are as relevant as ever. Part of his appeal is that he's on camera, we can see him and get a sense of who he is, and he takes some personal risk my putting it own face to controversial opinions. Magazine critics of the past put their name on their work, but they were hidden behind the obfuscation of print media. You know they would never say those things if they were talking to fans of the musician face to face, so brave.

Reviews have been read post-release forever, I don't think that has anything to do with it, I think it's that opinion in general has lost commodity value. Opinion can be had for free, no need to sit through popup ads to get it. Even on RT or IMDB I'll skip the professional movie reviews and jump straight to the user reviews, and just by glancing at them I can tell whether or not the reviewer in on the same wavelength as myself. The odds are also a lot lower that user critics are being bribed, buttered up, or settling a score with someone involved in the thing being critiqued.
