Default that batch of songs from around 1989 that were only played live

songs like i am my end, razor, try to try, lie i lie, salt, etc.

the last time the band went to reel time studios was apparently to record these songs, but jimmy didn't show up so they did an acoustic session instead: http://www.spfc.org/band/studio.html?session_id=6

but why didn't they ever record them at any of the next chances they had?

it seems strange that the band just abandoned the idea of recording those songs for some reason. they were still playing some of these songs live in 1990, 1991, and even i am my end in 1992, so they obviously didn't hate the songs or anything.
especially with billy being quite particular about putting compositions into the LOC to protect copyright, anyone know why these were neglected?

Razor stinks anyway.

Also lol at D’Arcy showing up but not bothering to play. I guess she was a bit lazy in the studio even back then

This is an area of the bands history that greatly interests me. I have asked Billy through various Q&A's but have never even gotten a hateful response. Maybe it's my affinity for that 80's goth /new wave sound, but I really love these songs. I hope they have a secret studio session in the vaults that has never been bootlegged.

you'd think if they recorded any of them as a studio / demo then they would have ended up on mashed potatoes instead of the live versions.

or they would have ended up on the gish / pi reissue.

if the agreement was to record certain songs as a full band, and that gets cancelled, then i don't think it's bad if she doesn't want to do something different instead all of a sudden.

billy and james obviously decided to do a (pretty shit, lets be honest) acoustic session spur of the moment, so i don't think darcy is obliged to play on that.

and often having bass doesn't work that well on acoustic only tracks anyway.

i am one part 2 is probably the only decent thing they did that day.

hmmm, razor shows up on this list (yellow piece of paper) from the gish sessions:

https://smashing-pumpkins-recording-..._Smart_Studios

also interesting that siva isn't on the list, the only song from gish not on there...

Without starting a new thread: I've always wondered why The Ignoffo Tape is classified as being from 1988, but the demos are the same from the 1989 Reel Time Sessions. Which is the correct year?

looks like it's a mix of 88 and 89 stuff, so it just gets labelled 88 as the starting date.

Can’t forget “Oui Henri” too. That’s a good one

Special thanks to Jim for blowing off this session to get fucked up and robbing us of more sweet pre Gish demos.

i know it's not really what you are asking for, but what is your definition of non-released?

my dahlia and sun got an official release. the smashing pumpkins demo tape was an official release even though very limited and only cassette. bye june was on lull. daughter was released on the flexi. honeyspider and not worth asking were on the bonus 7" with pisces.

but yes, you are missing 'waiting' and 'waiting for you now' from the acoustic reel time studio session mentioned at the start.

To clarify, I mean main sequence release. Be it an album like Gish, or a compilation like Pisces, Earphoria or TAFH. Singles and such don't count.

At this early point in their career Billy didn't have much power to leverage against Jimmy for not showing up to a session. Jimmy could have said fuck you and peaced out and Billy would've never found a drummer as good. But you can bet that after Gish and SD that Billy ruled with an iron fist and came down on Jim like a ton of bricks if he stepped out of line, which tbh is probably what the dude needed. So much great music wouldn't have been made if Billy just let the band fuck around.
