A few years back a co-worker asked me what kind of music I like and I gave them this vague, minute long explanation of my proclivities and they gave me this blank look and then said "Oh. Do you like 96.5??!?"

What really grinds my gears just as bad as the people who answer "everything" are the people who insist on listening only to driving, intense rock and nothing else. I have a friend that calls anything mid-tempo and lower "kumbaya music" and complains until we put something on he can headbang to. Come on, man. Broaden your horizons.

Kids growing up today will mock you for your "albums" while they buy their ringtones.

no they'll still download albums because it'll take them like 3 seconds but they'll only listen to the first two songs because they'll lose attention after that

No, that's pretty much true. I have only met a couple females who seem to generally love music and aren't going nuts over their new favorite band every month or so.

CDs dead in 5 years, eh?
Through all of the recent Pumpkins news, I stumbled across an article by Billy's favorite journalist, that Jim DeRogatis dude about Neil Young's upcoming archive set. I guess during SXSW, they unveiled that hog and everybody was (rightfully so) freaking out about it. It's going to be released in a suggested blu-ray format, but they're offering up CD and DVD formats so "even after CDs become extinct within the next five years, as almost every speaker at the conference has predicted" they'll still have something to sell.
That quote blew my mind - and while I do see the extinction of CD's coming down the pipeline in the not too distant future, it still causes me to furrow my brow. What will replace CDs and therefore hold the tide against the people we're discussing in this thread? Granted, LP's are surging in popularity again - but bands won't release entire albums only to be released on LP - there has to be some other medium that an entire album will be released on other than an iTunes album, doesn't there? Thought that was a really interesting consensus of those "folks in the know" - that the CD will be dead within 5 years - I can't help but feel like when the CD dies, that will inherently do bad stuff to those people who still like to buy albums. |

What are you talking about "CDs" we're talking about albums you tea-bag.
There were albums before compact discs. And there were symphonies before recordings. |

I am aware of the fact that you were talking about "albums".
The only reason I mentioned the CD topic is because it was/is the most prevalent way that albums are distributed nowadays. Albums in the past were LP's, cassettes, 8 tracks, DVD audio - whatever - but nowadays, the CD is the most common way that an album of music is distributed. And as I mentioned towards the end of my previous post, if the new way of distributing an album is in iTunes where you can pick and choose the tracks you want to buy, it's definitely not going to help folks who like to still buy entire albums. Your lack of thought put into my comment baffles me. |

they look at the part while disregarding the whole
-lack of cohesion, overall clarity, flow, etc... of course, only a quality album has these things |

it's still pretty easy to buy/download mp3 albums, I do it all the time. and no, there isn't going to be another physical medium that will replace CDs. The internets is here and people likes it. And thank goodness, when CDs came out much was made over how they cost less than cassettes. Of course, they never cost less then cassettes ever did, because of the RIAA's astounding greed but now they have no cost to publish, and indeed will probably even record digitally and never "press it to wax" as it were. Plus they have to compete with piracy so prices will/have gone down on new albums. Real artists will continue to record albums and if people don't want to buy the album they won't and who cares really. I mean most people buy albums for one song anyway. |

credit cards do exist and people may have them but it's not as much of a common cultural phenomenon as it is in america
my parents never had credit cards, i've never had one, and neither have any of my friends |

I have the avenue of exploiting peoples weakness and using their credit cards. It's hardly an invaluable understanding though. Take away the cd medium and i'll just download and not give a fuck. Unless those fuckers want to take echeques they can forget it. I mean I end up buying cds off ebay because of it.
