Is anyone ever truly happy?

Except me, of course. It's lonely at the top.

without revealing anything you're not comfortable with, can you elaborate/shed some light on this?

the video game industry used to be really cool in how niche-y it was, with companies like ID consisting of like 12 people, or even Midway in the 90's. those guys always seemed to be having fun with their games and would always toss in some inside jokes and easter eggs featuring people who worked there. i guess these days it's likely more corporate and soul corrupting but hopefully not for you

Lord god, no.

The reason I've remained in the industry is because for the majority of the last decade I've needed to be able to zip away for a day or two out of the blue to take my mom to hospital or medical appointment X or Y. I've remained here because I can do the job with my eyes closed and the people I work with are great. I'm actually mulling over new career options right now.

I wish it were the case, but this shit is the reason you don't get cheat codes in games anymore. I despise it. I used to have a huge love for videogaming growing up and now I'm just bitter. Amazing stuff still gets released pretty often, though I'm very hesitant to call this a "golden age of gaming" like many folks seem to like doing.

Most of it's not too bad, but the 'no debug' one is the one that gets me.

Want to put a code in your game? Fuck that, no debug functionality is allowed whatsoever (this is what a majority of old-school cheat codes were - developer shortcuts for testing purposes). You combine that with a rule that basically says "the only codes you're allowed to use are the ones you scratch off the back of a $20 virtual funds card" and I just get really disappointed over how monetized so much of everything here is nowadays.

There's turning a profit and there's trying to fuck your fanbase for every dollar they've got. I'm just glad that for the most part my company isn't too bad at it.

Aside from that you get a lot of tedious legal shit. Like 'display the publisher's logo or programming logo in full and if there's a part not visible you fail submission and have to pay the publishing company a five-digit figure for every time you resubmit. <-Proviso: this paragraph is a hodgepodge of scenarios I've encountered or heard about over the years.

The industry is FULL of people who have a genuine love and passion for creating great games, but it's become handled by upper-management types and shareholders who come out of places like Hollywood are completely out of fucking touch with what the typical gamer asks for and just want to maximize profits. Look at all the 'loot box' shit going on.

It's not all horrible, but it's just not where I want to be anymore.

Met, saw...the SENESCENCE of the Wicker Man is such that it demands acknowledgment and recognition be it inanimate object, artwork, or otherwise. It's so avant-garde it surely must be conscious of its own existence, self aware. Years beyond our understanding.

Hahahahahahaha

That's what I tell people who don't like The Room.
Even Blade Runner flopped when it came out, y'know?

The Room is incredible but I'm of the camp that it was totally by accident.

Me too. It even won a bunch of awards, quite ironically.
I like James Franco. Hopefully this movie delivers. It didn't even come out where I live.

Yes, we're watching both that and The Room one after the other. It might be too much Wiseau. Not sure if ready.

Btw, have you seen or heard of Neil Breen? He's a Tommy Wiseau type director he does fantastic stuff like this:

Yeah i was unlocking achievements with my socks just last night and thinking “this used to be way more fun what happened” couldn’t decide if it was the socks or (worse) maybe I’ve just grown out of them and thus will never be happy again?!?

I honestly can't get enough of Wiseau. I fucking love how he speaks. "I DID NAHT HIT HER! I DID NAAAAHT!"
BTW, The Disaster Artist is based on a book by Greg Sestero, the dude who plays Mark. He's Tommy's best friend. I really like the audiobook because he nails Wiseau's accent. I'll upload it if you're interested.

Neil Breen seems super interesting. I love filmmakers like these. Thanks!
Watch Samurai Cop from 1991, it's almost as good as The Room.
