Written by Nick Cave, who also took care of the score in collaboration with Warren Ellis, and directed by the guy responsible for The Road.

speaking of the Snowtown imagery - I just learned that Snowtown, Top of The Lake, and the first season of True Detective were all done by the same cinematographer, Adam Arkapaw.
watched Wild Tales (Relatos Salvajes), 2014 brilliant. Six short films in a row, each story crazier than the next, first half I couldn't stop laughing at all. Also unforgettable images of road rage and the sickest wedding party I've ever seen in any movie. I'm glad I didn't watch it when it came out last year, read something about similarities of one story to the Germanwings plane crash then, not sure how entertaining it would have been at the time. |

I watched Is the Man Who is Tall Happy? I liked it. It's not really that in-depth into Chomsky's linguistic theories, so I suppose one should just check out one of his books if that's what one's looking for. It had enough tidbits of it to interest me, like how he came to propose generative grammar and whatnot. Also has bits of Chomsky's epistemology, which seems to be pretty similar to mine. He seems quite Popperian when it comes to the philosophy of science, though I tend to find myself more in-between Popper and Kuhn in respect to their views on how science has developed.
It also has a lot of biographical elements, which is novel, because Chomsky is the kind of guy who typically doesn't like to make his work about himself or romanticize his writings, and is instead very clinical and substance-over-style. So, it's not often that you hear stories about how he wouldn't eat his oatmeal as a child or something. But overall, even if it's not an in-depth analysis of any one topic, it's mostly just interesting watching Gondry and Chomsky talk about these things in general, even the times when they misinterpret each other and talk past each other. Just letting you know that I'm keeping an eye on your and Buzzard's posts because you seem like film buffs who know your stuffs. |

It Follows was exceedingly mediocre. Not at all worth the hype.

Slint: Breadcrumb Trail
mehhh. This was really boring. Hardly anyone has anything interesting to say. The band members themselves are uninteresting. Everyone mumbles through their uneventful memories like they just woke up. There is no struggle and nothing to be sympathetic about. Slint are obviously fantastic musicians but this doco is little more than an exercise in modesty. |

I'm pretty sure it would only interest the most hardcore of Slint fans.

I remember really liking Mean Girls when I first saw it, and then watching it years later and realizing that it doesn't hold up.
As far as teen flicks go, I really dig Ghost World. I guess it doesn't qualify as a "high-school movie" because the bulk of it takes place the summer after the main characters' graduation. It's a pretty faithful adaptation of the comic, though not slavishly so, and makes it's own decisions that sort of push it in a different direction. The core of it is there, though, kind of being a deconstruction of that teen-angsty "unpopular suburban underdog rebelling against superficiality of their peers" genre, and being a bit more of a frank in depicting how shitty it is to constantly hide behind a snarky veneer to mask vulnerabilities like the fear of growing up and one's familiar, comfortable environment changing. I think some of the deviations from the comic actually strengthened Enid's character, like making Rebecca the one leaving town for school, to sort of entrench the idea that Enid is the character who finds herself alienated by everyone maturing while she refuses to change. Also, Steve Buscemi. |

Just saw Gone Girl. I thought it was kind of dumb. Don't understand why it was so widely lauded.

Fast Times at Ridgemont High- Boring Dazed and Confused - same Breakfast Club - good but super cheesy and never could bear or buy Allison's end transformation Valley Girl - boring Ferris Bueller's Day Off - Ferris is an asshole. i used to like it and then realised ferris was a overprivileged dickweed and entirely unlikable, he selfishly gets his friend in trouble and barely gives a fuck Sixteen Candles - loses loads of points because long duk dong...like wtf....fine otherwise Say Anything - the worst. And no late 80s teen would blast Peter Gabriel unless they were super lame. 32 yrs old Cameron Crowe might have though Can't Buy Me love - never seen Super Bad - meh Better off Dead - The #1 best, all time favorite HS films Pretty in Pink - always found it pretty unmemorable |

"No finer race of men have ever... peeled a potato." now i have nothing against the irish, quite the contrary, but it's just a good line |

Love & Mercy
brian wilson's dramatized autobiography. i was instantly curious about this because i love brian wilson but at first i thought john cusack was a terrible casting call - i was completely off. he pulled it off amazingly well, and nailed brian wilson's demeanor and speech. paul giamatti also delivers a menacing performance as eugene landy. the whole movie does an amazing job making you feel like it was filmed in the seventies. lots of great sequences, great "studio footage" and nods to amazing songs, interesting narrative. definitely enjoyed it. recommended |

Hadn't seen it in a while. I don't think it is Lynch's best but its certainly thought provoking. I think the ending might be a little bit more complex than the obvious. Haven't found an interpretation beyond the face value of it, but it seemed unsettling to me. |
