you could construct a post-punk song on a programming grid a hell of a lot more easily than you could something from kind of blue, or honestly probably any big jazz record

and not just because of changes in time-signatures or whatever, just general spontaneity & dynamics of expression & whatnot

jazz for the most comes off like the (usually) instrumental equivalent of stream-of-consciousness writing or something

Yes because Jazz is really complex theory pushed to its limit as said before so it sounds that way.

I'm struggling to find another metaphor for this

i was listening to ella fitzgerald and louie armstrong yesterday, just so fucking great

it's a blend maybe between being improvisational and yet very structured and song-based

you're struggling that's for sure

can't you just deal with the fact that maybe even though on paper this stuff is complex it's really just the irrational feelings of a coupla individuals who are just laying their hearts out through their instruments? jesus fucking christ

i mean in theory they're doing this stuff but how is that any more mathematical than it is literary, just because they're not using words as lyrics or whatever

moreover what in the absolute fuck does it matter, i don't even remember how anyone got here!

It doesn't matter I guess

I wouldn't say it's any more or less literary than the Blues or Classical. idk

But something like Punk or Hip-Hop is much more literary in that it's trying to express ideas through music the way authors try to express ideas through novels. There are elements like humor and politics that you would normally associate with books.

so what, you're just talking literally about the use of words? i thought this was more "x genre is the equivalent of literature" or some other such shit, all of which is kind of ridiculous in the end

i mean nobody's gonna argue that math rock makes use of general mathematics, for one, lol

but i 'onno this all got a little too heady for me, i need a nap

You don't even know how to play an instrument. I play drums, guitar, bass, piano and the harmonica. Seems like I know a fuck of a lot more than you

A lot of the most famous jazz artists didn't understand theory and performed in a more off the cuff, jam-band writing style.

This. The jazz guys are all about improvisation. It's not like they're sitting down trying to come up with some complex theory just for the sake of it.

no, you don't.

you are a high school dropout
you often spout word salad
you have zero knowledge
you can't even talk about music without sounding stupid
the terms you use are frequently incorrect
you have no appreciation for history
you often make false associations
you can't identify certain bands and still act like you know all about them
you can't write a song to save your life
your band sucks
and you play all those instruments badly

one day you are going to have to come to terms with the fact that you are willfully stupid and uneducated

A large majority of Bowies back-catalog is absolute bloated garbage. I find even his most popular tracks a little underwhelming.

Little China girl? Gimme a break.

Lets be real, thinking kinda sucks. It creates doubt, you start to see the strings. Much easier to be ignorant; see voltaire

so anyway part of my new mythology of rap music is that i hate that style of rap music where the song was born out of basically a cool catch phrase or one clever line which is repeated, with slight variations, like 48 times every chorus and at the beginning of the song and then in between that its just a handful of dudes rapping about god knows what it doesn't matter.
i think mid aughties swishahouse houston rap fits this discription

lets take fuzzyroses for example, it's clear he reacts by instinct and doesn't really sit down and think about anything. He seems resistant to learning new things, on account of the fact that he thinks he knows everything (because he's a "musician"). Entertainment is pretty much the only thing he wants from music, as he tells us "it's just music, nothing to take seriously" he doesn't want music to be challenging or thought provoking until the mainstream approves (dino jr, pixies, sonic youth) long after their sound ceases to be provocative or challenging. Yet, he sees himself as intellectual equals with anyone, he is convinced he has something to contribute, he doesn't believe even a high school education is worth anything even though by his own admission he's stuck in neutral, he doesn't have the good sense enough not to be arrogant or relentlessly self assured. it's quite remarkable really.

I don't know why you think a high school education is a great thing of merit. It really isn't. You need it to conform to societal standards but you don't really learn a whole lot that's worth knowing.

Canadian history? Talk about some of the most boring, pointless drivel you'll ever have to learn. Math? You only need to know the basic necessities in the day and age of Google. Science? Some good stuff in there, but a lot of shit that I couldn't care less about. English? some good stuff again but then you get forced into evaluating pieces of literature that have been beaten into the ground to death that I couldn't care less about.

It's all a sham man. High School has no baring on ones intelligence.

Jesus fucking christ I don't even know where to start with this post. But for starters, of course his singles/big hits aren't going to represent the best of his work and even if you were taking him purely on the quality of his "most popular tracks" there's gotta be a dozen Bowie songs better loved than Little China Girl, and all of them are better songs.

Yeah well then say that, don't arbitrarily draw up excuses for why you don't like his music.

"There's a lot of throwaway filler [in Bowie's Catalog]" - yeah no shit dude, there's a lot of throwaway filler in Nick Cave's entire catalogue because much like bowie he's been at it >30 years and he's released upwards of 15 albums. Of course it's not all going to be solid gold. Doesn't make cave anything less than one of the greatest songwriters and lyricists of the last three decades.
