Alternative R&B is what millenials will be remembered for
I was talking with my friend about how alternative R&B (The Weeknd, Drake, Partynextdoor, Banks, Bryson Tiller, Alunageorge, Jhene Aiko etc.) is a cultural shift and generational shift in the same way that grunge and shoegaze were a cultural and generational shift in the 90s. It's what millennials are going to be remembered for. But he still maintains that unlike grunge its just a fad

I can't wait for the Weeknd / Drake/ Partynextdoor love triangle movie that will come out in 20 years. It will be legendary.

grunge was a fad, "generational shift" music trends are mostly marketing, why haven't you realigned your avatar yet

Emo, like grunge and "alt RnB" started as its own thing and was eventually commodified, though I think it could be argued that by the time it was codified enough to be marketable, it had changed significantly enough from its origins to be essentially a different thing entirely. I also think it falls in a different category cause it was more of an outlier indie genre that broke mainstream ground over time rather than a "once-in-a-generation-musical-revolution" type situation like the other examples.

Thought emo was from Embrace, Rites of Spring, Saetia, Cap'n Jazz, Orchid and similar groups in like the late 80s. Or are we talking about the mainstream adaptation with the likes of My Chemical Romance. If so yeah millennials definitely fucked up with that fad.
