I think D’Arcy publicly calling him out probably humiliated and angered him. He felt like his back was against the wall and worked extra hard to make himself and the band look as legitimate as possible this time around. In other words, D’Arxy is STILL the moral conscience of the band. lol

I think it's a combo of these things. We tend to think of people as static, especially when we watch them do the same stupid shit over and over, but people do change. I'm not apologizing for Billy or saying he's not still an asshole, but his attitude has changed over the last 2.5 years or so, starting with James and Jimmy getting on stage with him in 2016.

I think as much as he tries to deflect all criticism of himself, he actually has a very fragile ego and desperately seeks external validation. He probably took note of how different the public and critical reaction was to seeing the original band (minus D'arcy) on stage in 2016, and I wouldn't be surprised if that got him thinking about a lot of other shit. He's in his 50s now, he is or was ostensibly in debt, has a little kid to take care of... some combo of these factors finally broke through his wall of defensiveness and forced him to choose between continuing down the same self-sabotaging path or admitting he was wrong about some things and changing course.

This is just a personal hunch, but I also think he feels hurt by the social backlash he has felt from his transphobic remarks, weirdly praising Trump, going on Alex Jones and being widely quoted saying SJWs are as bad as terrorist hate groups... Again this is just a guess based on knowing people I perceive to be sort of like Bill (old out of touch gen x thinks he is cool white dude), but they rarely consider themselves right wing or prejudiced. I could write a lot about this, but my guess is that in Bill's own internal narrative, he does not recognize himself as a Trump guy or a social conservative, and his brain probably went into entitled anger/frustration/discomfort mode when people called him on his transphobia, focused on him making wishy washy positive comments on Trump's attitude, or hanging out with the crisis actor in chief. So his tack now has been to not speak about those kinds of things, and he has made several comments about trying to keep his mouth closed.

Fair enough. I was thinking him getting his shit together just in terms of actually pulling off the tour with reasonably decent press, no major public relations disasters, and a reasonably good reception even from jaded fans.
