bull-shit most kids who have played for a couple years could not "play it in their sleep". She's got all of the fast octave bends going on flawlessly... It may not be Eddie Van Halen level, but she can fucking play

Damn, that is pretty good! I'm gonna check out more of their shit.

Look, I'm not saying that Damones lead singer is incredible when compared to other artists, but I personally really enjoy her vibe and style. And she has the proficiency to back up any critique.

Thing is, this is perfectly reasonable. But when you tack on all the "This is soo much better than that Joy Formidable shit y'all like" you're gonna get all sorts of shit back.

Joy Formidable is one of many bands I have heard in recent years who, to me, have the whole decked out package, but what's inside is not quite as cool as the box.

most rock bands these days seem to be niche acts referencing movements from the past or very specific genre definitions instead of really trying to create their own unique sound. Joy Formidable are great musicians and they have all the aspects you would expect from a great band. I mean when they get going they fucking rock, they can really play. they should be exactly the kind of thing I would love coming from a 90s fuzz rock crazy drums shoegaze type pedigree or whatever

and yet somehow the music lacks the soul to really capture my imagination.

I only ever heard the first one. 1/3 really good songs and the rest were meh. I was really into a few of their tunes for awhile and I'll still play the Greatest Light and Whirring (sorry if those are not the actual song names 2010 was a long time ago)

but I never even felt compelled to check out their follow-ups

leopard and the lung is the only song worth remembering, rest of it sounds really clean and polished like muse because they toured with them so i was like oh well i thought you were hitting pots and pans together but i see this is about being slick & famouse

I would definitely take Muse over TJF. I get the Muse hate and I used to be on the that train. I'll never love them but I respect them and they have a fairly large pool of good songs though none of the albums I have heard are consistent at all

fuzzy can't tell the difference between good and bad music. plus he's a sexist drunk. my guess is that the videos that he started this thread with were something random that he found on Youtube

Awww

But I feel the same way about a lot of stuff I used to like too. It's good to revisit regularly and see what one still likes. I'm going through my digital music now and have been finding turds.

i mean the entire culture is nothing but disposable product, a band is the next big thing at south by, tours all the festivals over the summer, and is ridiculed has been by the end of the year. and they should be usually, its almost always disposable junk that sounds like a grab bag of old bands that were better. our culture is just as bad as our society, ultimately and our art will reflect that. so if our society & culture is exploitative and superficial and shallow then that will be what the vast chunk of our artistic output is. I mean flash in the pan hipster post-punk cover bands are just as trash as super hero movies it just doesn't make as much money

some guys get upset by this kind of criticism because they've branded themselves as a music lover and look at my vast collection to prove it. "It was ok, I gave it a B" is their life. The fact that At the Drive In has a new record is an exciting event for him instead of a mystifying, unnecessary attempt to revisit something that cannot be revisited (mostly because the band wants money). These guys shame you for not wanting to listen to stuff like that or the Refused album because for them, the band branding is an intrinsic part of their self identity and if you question the band's ability, intent, or quality then you're attacking their identity. For them, being a music appreciator is about giving a B to everything & being fine with it, and when someone trashes it they're making personal attacks on you

At my age, I feel like my identity has way less to do with what art i like, be it music or books or what have you, and more to do with what i do with my time and how i interact and treat people.

I dunno, i still like tunes and words but i can't fathom using those things as an indicator of my self-identity anymore.

Dunno if i am.wording any of this correctly. My brain has been strange for over a year now. And i don't feel like myself sometimes nor do i make sense to myself all the time. stress and sadness is a poor combination.

I think I know what you mean. I got to an age after college where identifying personally with the kind of music I like just seemed really stupidly trivial, unimportant, and small. No one really cares what kind of music you like.

there's this woman who often studied where i studied on campus with a sticker on her laptop that says "IF IT AIN'T COUNTRY IT AIN'T MUSIC"

it's like hello welcome to south florida we are not like north florida. and by that i mean no one likes country music and we will be in the ocean is less than 50 years.
